The writer who was inspired to write this
Old Testament document was Moses (See Ex
17:14). We have no reason to doubt Jesus’
statement that Moses was indeed the writer
(Mk 1:44; see Jn 5:46,47; 7:19-22; At 26:22).
Moses lived his first forty years in Egypt in
preparation to carry out God’s plan to lead
Israel out of Egyptian captivity. Being reared
in the Egyptian palace by the daughter of
Pharaoh, Moses was trained in all the skills of
Egyptian leadership. When he fled for refuge to the wilderness, Moses spent another forty
years in learning the skills of desert dwelling
at the feet of his father-in-law, Jethro. Once
called by God to deliver Israel, Moses then
spent another forty years using his skills of
leadership to lead the freed nation of Israel to
the promised land (See also intro. to Gn).
BOOK
The key thought of this book is “deliverance.”
Chapter 3:7,8 indicates the purpose of the book.
Exodus 12:13 explains how God redeemed Israel out of Babylonian captivity.
The word “Exodus” means “to go out.” The
name comes from the name that was given
to the book in the Greek Septuagint, though
the Jews referred to the book with the word
“Shemoth” that means “names.”
It is commonly assumed that the Pentateuch,
including Exodus, was written during the
wandering of Israel in the wilderness, prior to
the entrance of the nation into Canaan. The
book was thus written sometime between
1,445 and 1,400 B.C.
This book is a continuation of the history of
the book of Genesis. The history of the book
begins with the death of Joseph, and continues
to the time when the tabernacle was set up at
the foot of Mt. Sinai. From the death of Joseph,
to the erection of the tabernacle at the foot
of Mt. Sinai, would be a period of about 360
years. When studying the book of Exodus, it is
important to understand the book of Genesis,
since God’s redemptive work with mankind is
continued into the book of Exodus.
It might be said that the book of Exodus is
a metaphor of God’s redemptive work with all
mankind. The literal definition of the metaphor
“redemption” is found in the nation of Israel that
was first in bondage in Egypt. The Israelites
could not deliver themselves. It was necessary,
therefore, that through His grace, God redeem
Israelites from their bondage. As the children
of Abraham by faith, all believers have been delivered by grace from their bondage in sin,
a bondage from which we could never deliver
ourselves (See 1 Co 10:1-1). Exodus is the
book of redemption in the Old Testament,
explaining how God delivers His people from
that which they cannot deliver themselves.
Because the book is about the deliverance of
Israel from the captivity of Egypt, the historical
event, and its metaphorical application set the
prophetic stage for illustrations that are used
in reference to the Redeemer, Jesus, who was
yet to come in history after the exodus of Israel
from Egypt. Moses was a deliverer, lawgiver
and prophet, and so would be the Christ (Dt
18:15-18). In this book the Passover lamb is
sacrificed, which sacrifice Jesus would also
make for the sins of humanity in the future (Ex
12:6; 1 Co 5:7,8). Living bread was given to
sustain Israel in the wilderness (Ex 16:4), and
such Jesus would spiritually give to all those
who would come to Him (Jn 6:48-51). Moses
smote the rock from which Israel drank living
water in the wilderness (Ex 17:6). Jesus is now
the living water from which we drink and live (1
Co 10:4). The veil of the physical tabernacle
was that through which Jesus spiritually passed
for the atonement of our sins (Hb 10:19,20).
He passed through the veil as our high priest.
This was a type from Aaron under the Levitical
system who went every year into the Most
Holy Place for the atonement of the sins of the
people (Ex 28:36-41; Hb 7:23-28; 9:11).
Chapter 1 — Creation
¶1Now a these are the names of the children of Israel who came into Egypt. Every man and his household came with Jacob:2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah, 3Issachar, Zebulun and Benjamin,4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.5 And all the souls who came out of the loins of Jacob were b seventy souls, for Joseph was in Egypt already.
6 So c Joseph died, and all his brothers and all that generation.
7 d And the children of Israel were fruitful and increased abundantly and multiplied, and became exceedingly mighty. And the land was filled with them. ¶8 Now there rose up a new king over Egypt e who did not know Joseph.9 And he said to his people, “Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and f mightier than we. 10 g "Come, let us h deal wisely with them, lest they multiply and it come to pass that when there is any war, they join also to our enemies, and fight against us and depart from the land.”11 Therefore, they set taskmasters over them i to afflict them with their j burdens. And they built for Pharaoh k treasure cities, Pithom and l Rameses.12 But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were in fear of the children of Israel.13 So the Egyptians m ruthlessly made the children of Israel to labor. 14 And they n made their lives bitter with hard bondage in o mortar and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field. All their service wherein they made them serve, was with hard labor.¶15 Then the king of Egypt spoke to the p Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of one was Shiphrah and the name of the other was Puah. 16 And he said, “When you do the work of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them on the birthstools, if it is a q son, then you will kill him. But if it is a daughter, then she will live.”17 But the midwives r feared God and did not do s as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the male children alive.18 So the king of Egypt called for the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this thing, and have saved the male children alive?” 19 And the t midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women, for they are lively and give birth before the midwives come in to them.”20 u Therefore, God dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied and became very mighty.
21 Now it came to pass because the midwives feared God v that He established households for them. 22 Then Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, “wEvery son who is born, you will cast into the river. And every daughter, you will save alive.”

Chapter 2 — The Birth of Moses
¶1 Now a a man from the house of Levi went and married a daughter of Levi.2 And the woman conceived and bore a son. b And when she saw that he was a beautiful child, she hid him for three months.3 Now when she could no longer hide him, she took an ark of c bulrushes for him and daubed it with d tar and e pitch. And she put the child in it and set it in the reeds by the f river’s bank.4g Then his sister stood afar off to see what would happen to him.¶5 Now the h daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river. And her maidens walked along by the river’s side. And when she saw the ark among the reeds, she sent her maid to fetch it.6 Now when she had opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the babe wept. And she had compassion on him, and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.”7 Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Will I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women so that she may nurse the child for you?”8 And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go.” And the maid went and called the child’s mother.9 Then Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away and nurse it for me, and I will give you your wages.” And the woman took the child and nursed it.10 And the child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter and he became i her son. And she called his name Moses, and she said, “Because I drew him out of the water.”¶11 Now it came to pass in those days j when Moses was grown that he went out to his brethren and looked on their burdens. And he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his brothers.12 So he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he k slew the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.13l And when he went out the second day, behold, two men of the Hebrews were fighting each other. And he said to him who did the wrong, “Why are you striking your companion?”14 And he said, n “Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Are you intending to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?” o And Moses feared and said, “Surely this thing is known.”15 Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to kill Moses. p But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh and dwelt in the q land of Midian. And he sat down by r a well.¶16s Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters. t And they came and drew water and filled the u troughs to water their father’s flock.17 Then the v shepherds came and w drove them away. But Moses stood up and helped them and x watered their flock.18 Now when they came to y Reuel their father, z he said, “Why is it that you have returned so soon today?”19 And they said, “An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and also drew water enough for us and watered the flock.”20 Then he said to his daughters, “And where is he? Why is it that you have left the man? Call him so that he may a eat bread.”21 So Moses was content to dwell with the man. And he gave Moses b Zipporah his daughter.22 And she bore him a son. And he called his name c Gershom, for he said, “I have been d a sojourner in a foreign land.”¶23 Now it came to pass e in the course of time that the king of Egypt died. And the children of Israel f groaned because of the bondage. And they cried and g their cry came up to God because of the bondage.24 And God h heard their groaning. And God i remembered His j covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob.25 So God k looked on the children of Israel. And God l acknowledged them.

Chapter 3 — Moses and the Burning Bush
¶1 Now Moses kept the flock of a Jethro his father-in-law, the b priest of Midian. And he led the flock to the back of the desert and came to the c mountain of God, even to d Horeb.2 Then the e Angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. And he looked, and behold, the bush burned with fire, yet the bush was not consumed.3 Then Moses said, “I will now turn aside and see this f great sight, why the bush is not burned up.”4 So when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called g to him out of the midst of the bush, and said, “Moses, Moses.” And he said, “Here I am.”5 Then He said, “Do not come near. h Take off your shoes from off your feet, for the place whereon you stand is holy ground.”6 He also said, i “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for j he was afraid to look upon God.¶7 Then the LORD said, k “I have surely seen the affliction of My people who are in Egypt. And l I have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters, m for I know their sorrows.8 And n I have come down to o deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land to p a good and spacious land, to a land q flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the r Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites.9 Now therefore, behold, the s cry of the children of Israel has come to Me. And I have also seen the t oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them.10u “Come now therefore, and I will send you to Pharaoh so that you may bring forth My people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.”11 Then Moses said to God, v “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt?”12 And He said, w “Certainly I will be with you, and this will be a x token to you that I have sent you. When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will serve God on this mountain.”¶13 And Moses said to God, “Behold, when I come to the children of Israel, and will say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ now they will say to me, ‘What is His name?’ What will I say to them?”14 And God said to Moses, “I AM THAT I AM.” And He said, “Thus you will say to the children of Israel, y ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”15 Then God furthermore said to Moses, “Thus you will say to the children of Israel, ‘The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ z This is My name forever and this is My memorial to all generations.”16 Go and a gather the elders of Israel together and say to them, ‘The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac and of Jacob, appeared to me, saying, b “I have surely visited you and seen what has been done to you in Egypt.”17 So I have said, c I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt to the land of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, to a land flowing with milk and honey.”’18 And d they will hearken to your voice. And e you will come, you and the elders of Israel, to the king of Egypt. And you will say to him, ‘The LORD God of the Hebrews has f met with us. And now let us go, we beseech you, three days’ journey into the wilderness so that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God.’19 And I am sure that the king of Egypt g will not let you go, no, not even by a mighty hand.20 So I will h stretch out My hand and smite Egypt with i all My wonders that I will do in the midst of it. And j after that he will let you go.21 Then k I will give this people favor in the sight of the Egyptians. And it will come to pass that when you go, you will not go empty-handed.22 But every woman will borrow from her neighbor, and from her who lives in her house, m jewels of silver and jewels of gold and clothing. And you will put them on your sons and on your daughters, and thus, n you will plunder the Egyptians.

Chapter 4 — God’s Sign for Moses
¶1 Then Moses answered and said, “But suppose they will not believe me, nor hearken to my voice, for they will say, ‘The LORD has not appeared to you.’”2 So the LORD said to him, “What is that in your hand?” And he said, “A staff.”3 Then He said, “Cast it on the ground.” And he cast it on the ground and it became a serpent. And Moses fled from before it.4 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Reach out your hand and take it by the tail.” And he reached out his hand and caught it, and it became a staff in his hand.5 “Do this so that they may a believe that the b LORD God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has appeared to you.”6 And the LORD furthermore said to him, “Put now your hand into your bosom.” And he put his hand into his bosom. And when he took it out, behold, his hand was leprous c like snow.7 Then He said, “Put your hand into your bosom again.” And he put his hand into his bosom again and took it out of his bosom, and behold, d it was turned again as his other flesh.8 “Now it will come to pass if they will not believe you, nor hearken to the voice of the e first sign, they will believe the voice of the latter sign.”9 “And it will come to pass if they will not believe also these two signs, nor hearken to your voice, that you will take of the water of the river and pour it on the dry land. And the f water that you take out of the river will become blood on the dry land.”¶10 Then Moses said to the LORD, “O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither before nor since You have spoken to Your servant. But g I am slow of speech and of a slow tongue.”11 So the LORD said to him, h “Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes the dumb or deaf or the seeing or the blind? Is it not I, the LORD?”12 “Now therefore go, and I will be i with your mouth and teach you what you will say.”13 And he said, “O my Lord, j please send by the hand of whomever else You may send.”14 Now the k anger of the LORD was kindled against Moses. And He said, “Is not Aaron the Levite your l brother? I know that he can speak well. And also, behold, m he comes forth to meet you. And when he sees you, he will be glad in his heart.”15 “And n you will speak to him and o put words in his mouth. And I will be with your mouth and with his mouth. And p I will teach you what you will do.”16 “Now he will be your spokesman to the people. And he will be as a mouth for you and q you will be as God to him.17 And you will take this staff in your hand with which you will do signs.”¶18 Then Moses went and returned to r Jethro his father-in-law, and said to him, “Please let me go and return to my brethren who are in Egypt and see whether they are still alive.” And Jethro said to Moses, s “Go in peace.”19 Now the LORD said to Moses in t Midian, “Go back to u Egypt, for v all the men who sought your life are dead.”20 So Moses w took his wife and his sons and set them on a donkey, and he returned to the land of Egypt. And Moses took the x staff of God in his hand.21 Then the LORD said to Moses, “When you go back to Egypt see that you do all the y wonders before Pharaoh that I have put in your hand. However, z I will harden his heart so that he will not let the people go.”22 Then you will a say to Pharaoh, ‘Thus says the LORD, b “Israel is My son, even c My firstborn. And I say to you, let My son go so that he may serve Me. And if you refuse to let him go, behold, d I will slay your son, even your firstborn.”’”¶24 Now it came to pass on the way, at the e encampment, that the LORD f met him and sought to g kill him.25 Then h Zipporah took i a sharp stone and cut off the foreskin of her son, and cast it at his feet, and said, “Surely you are a husband of blood to me.”26 So He let him go. Then she said, “You are a husband of blood”—because of the circumcision.¶27 Then the LORD said to Aaron, “Go into the wilderness j to meet Moses.” And he went and met him on k the mountain of God and kissed him.28 And Moses l told Aaron all the words of the LORD who had sent him, and all the m signs that He had commanded him.29 So Moses and Aaron n went and gathered together all the elders of the children of Israel.30o And Aaron spoke all the words that the LORD had spoken to Moses. And he did the signs in the sight of the people.31 So the people p believed. And when they heard that the LORD had q visited the children of Israel, and that He r had looked upon their affliction, then s they bowed their heads and worshiped.

Chapter 5 — Bricks Made Without Straw
¶1 Then afterward Moses and Aaron went in and told Pharaoh, “Thus says the LORD God of Israel, ‘Let My people go so that they may hold a a feast to Me in the wilderness.’”2 But Pharaoh said, b “Who is the LORD that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I do not know the LORD, c nor will I let Israel go.”3 Then they said, d “The God of the Hebrews has e met with us. Please, let us go three days’ journey into the desert and sacrifice to the LORD our God, lest He fall on us with f pestilence or with the sword.”4 But the king of Egypt said to them, “Moses and Aaron, why do you draw the people away from their works? Get back to your g labors!”5 Then Pharaoh said, “Behold, the people of the land are h now many and you make them rest from their labors.”6 So Pharaoh commanded the same day the i taskmasters of the people and their officers, saying,7 “You will no longer give the people straw to make j brick as previously. Let them go and gather straw for themselves.8 “And the quota of the bricks that they were making previously, you will lay on them. You are not to reduce any of it. For they are idle; therefore they cry out, saying, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’9 “Let more work be laid on the men so that they may work in it, and let them not regard false words.”¶10 So the taskmasters of the people went out, and their officers, and they spoke to the people, saying, “Thus says Pharaoh, ‘I will not give you straw.11 ‘You go and get straw where you can find it, but none of your work will be reduced.’”12 So the people were scattered throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble instead of straw.13 And the taskmasters pressed them, saying, “Fulfill your works, your daily tasks, as when there was straw.”14 And the k officers of the children of Israel whom Pharaoh’s taskmasters had set over them, were l beaten. And they asked, “Why have you not fulfilled your task in making brick both yesterday and today, as previously?”¶15 Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried out to Pharaoh, saying, “Why do you deal this way with your servants?16 “There is no straw given to your servants, and they keep saying to us, ‘Make brick!’ And behold, your servants are beaten, but the fault is in your own people.”17 But he said, “You are lazy. You are lazy. Therefore you say, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to the LORD.’”18 “Therefore, go now and work, for no straw will be given you, yet you will deliver the quota of bricks.”19 Now the officers of the children of Israel saw that they were in trouble because they were told, “You will not reduce your daily quota of bricks.”¶20 So when they left Pharaoh’s presence, they met Moses and Aaron who stood there waiting for them.21m And they said to them, “The LORD look upon you and judge you because you have made us odious in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to kill us.”¶22 Then Moses returned to the LORD, and said, “Lord, why have You brought harm to this people? Why did You even send me?”23 “For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in Your name, he has done evil to this people, nor have You delivered Your people at all.”

Chapter 6 — God Speaks to Moses and the Genealogy of Moses and Aaron
1 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh, for with a a strong hand he will let them go and with a strong hand b he will drive them out of his land.”¶2 So God spoke to Moses and said to him, “I am the LORD.”3c “And I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob, by the name of d God Almighty, but by My name e LORD I did not make Myself known to them.4f “And I have also established My covenant with them, g to give them the land of Canaan, the land of their pilgrimage, h wherein they were foreigners.5i “And I have also heard the groaning of the children of Israel, whom the Egyptians keep in bondage. And I have remembered My covenant.6 “Therefore say to the children of Israel, j ‘I am the LORD and k I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. And I will deliver you out of their bondage. And I will l redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments.7m ‘And I will take you for Me for a people, and n I will be to you a God. And you will know that I am the LORD your God who brings you out o from under the burdens of the Egyptians.8 ‘And I will bring you into the land that p I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob. And I will give it to you for a possession. I am the LORD.’”9 So Moses spoke thus to the children of Israel. q But they did not hearken to Moses because of their r discouraged spirit and cruel bondage.¶10 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,11 “Go in and speak to Pharaoh king of Egypt, so that he let the children of Israel go out of his land.”12 And Moses spoke before the LORD, saying, “Behold, the children of Israel have not hearkened to Me. How then will Pharaoh hear me, for s I am unskilled in speech?”¶13 So the LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron. And He gave them a t charge for the children of Israel and for Pharaoh king of Egypt to bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt.¶14 These are the heads of their fathers’ houses: the u sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel: Hanoch and Pallu, Hezron and Carmi. These are the families of Levi according to their generations.¶20 And a Amram took for himself b Jochebed his father’s sister to wife, and she bore him c Aaron and Moses. And the years of the life of Amram were one hundred and thirty-seven years.21d And the sons of Izhar: Korah and Nepheg and Zichri.22 And the e sons of Uzziel: Mishael and Elzaphan and Zithri.23 And Aaron took for himself Elisheba, daughter of f Amminadab, sister of Naashon, to wife. And she bore him g Nadab and Abihu, h Eleazar and Ithamar.24 And the i sons of Korah: Donkeyir and Elkanah and Abiasaph. These are the families of the Korhites.25 And Eleazar Aaron’s son took one of the daughters of Putiel to wife. And j she bore him Phinehas. These are the heads of the fathers of the Levites according to their families.¶26 It was the same Aaron and Moses to whom the LORD said, “Bring out the children of Israel from the land of Egypt according to their k armies.”27 These are the ones who spoke to Pharaoh king of Egypt, l to bring out the children of Israel from Egypt. It was the same Moses and Aaron.¶28 Now it came to pass on the day when the LORD spoke to Moses in the land of Egypt,29 that the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, “I am the LORD. m Speak to Pharaoh king of Egypt all that I say to you.”30 But Moses said before the LORD, “Behold, n I am unskilled in speech. How then will Pharaoh hearken to me?”

Chapter 7 — Moses and Aaron Before Pharaoh, Aaron’s Staff, and the Plague of Blood
1 So the LORD said to Moses, “See, I have made you as a a god to Pharaoh. And Aaron your brother will be b your prophet.”2 “You c will speak all that I command you. And Aaron your brother will speak to Pharaoh so that he sends the children of Israel out of his land.”3 “And d I will harden Pharaoh’s heart and e multiply My f signs and My wonders in the land of Egypt.”4 “But g Pharaoh will not hearken to you h so that I may lay My hand on Egypt and bring forth My armies and My people the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt i by great judgments.”5 “And the Egyptians j will know that I am the LORD when I k stretch forth My hand on Egypt and l bring out the children of Israel from among them.”6 So Moses and Aaron did as the LORD commanded them, m so they did.7 Now Moses was n eighty years old and o Aaron eighty-three years old when they spoke to Pharaoh.¶8 Then the LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,9 “When Pharaoh speaks to you, saying, p ‘Show a miracle for yourselves,’ then you will say to Aaron, q ‘Take your staff and cast it before Pharaoh, and it will become a serpent’.”10 So Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh. And they did r as the LORD had commanded. And Aaron cast down his staff before Pharaoh and before his servants, and it s became a serpent.11 Then Pharaoh also t called the wise men and the u sorcerers, and they also, the magicians of Egypt, v did the same with their secret arts.12 For every man cast down his staff and they became serpents. But Aaron’s staff swallowed up their staffs.13 Then Pharaoh’s heart was hardened so that he did not hearken to them, as the LORD had said.¶14 Then the LORD said to Moses, w “Pharaoh’s heart is hardened. He refuses to let the people go.”15 “Go to Pharaoh in the morning as he is going out to the x water, and you will stand by the river’s bank to meet him. And you will take in your hand the y staff that was turned into a serpent.”16 “Then you will say to him, z ‘The LORD God of the Hebrews has sent me to you, saying, “Let My people go so a that they may serve Me in the wilderness. And behold, you have not listened until now.”’”17 “‘Thus says the LORD, “In this b you will know that I am the LORD. Behold, I will strike the waters that are in the river with the staff that is in my hand, and c they will be turned to d blood.”’”18 “And the fish that is in the river will die, and the river will stink. And the Egyptians will e loathe to drink from the water of the river.”’”¶19 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and f stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt, over their streams, over their rivers, and over their ponds, and over all their pools of water, so that they may become blood, and that there may be blood throughout all the land of Egypt, both in vessels of wood and in vessels of stone.’”20 So Moses and Aaron did as the LORD commanded. And he g lifted up the staff and struck the waters that were in the river, in the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of his servants. And all the h waters that were in the river were turned to blood.21 And the fish that were in the river died. And the river stank and the Egyptians i could not drink from the water of the river. And there was blood throughout all the land of Egypt.22j But the magicians of Egypt did so with k their enchantments. And Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he did not hearken to them, l as the LORD had said.23 Then Pharaoh turned and went into his house. His heart was not moved by this.24 And all the Egyptians dug around the river for water to drink, for they could not drink from the water of the river.¶25 So seven days were fulfilled after the LORD had smitten the river.

Chapter 8 — The Plagues of Frogs, Lice, and Flies
1 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘Thus says the LORD, “Let My people go so a that they may serve Me.”’”2 “And if you b refuse to let them go, behold, I will smite all your borders with c frogs.”3 “And the river will bring forth frogs abundantly that will go up and come into your house and into your d bedroom and on your bed and into the house of your servants and on your people and into your ovens and into your kneading bowls.”4 “And the frogs will come up both on you and on your people and on all your servants.”’”5 ¶ Then the LORD spoke to Moses, “Say to Aaron, e ‘Stretch forth your hand with your staff over the streams, over the rivers and over the ponds, and cause frogs to come upon the land of Egypt.’”6 So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and f the frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt.7g And the magicians did the same with their enchantments, and brought up frogs on the land of Egypt.¶8 Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron, and said, h “Pray to the LORD so that He may take away the frogs from me and from my people, and I will let the people i go so that they may sacrifice to the LORD.”9 Then Moses said to Pharaoh, “I give to you the honor of setting the time for your servants to pray for you and for your servants and for your people, to destroy the frogs from you and your houses so that they may remain in the river only.”10 And he said, “Tomorrow.” And he said, “May it be according to your word so that you may know j that there is none like the LORD our God.11 “And the frogs will depart from you and from your houses and from your servants and from your people. They will remain only in the river.”12 Then Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh. And Moses k cried out to the LORD because of the frogs that He had brought against Pharaoh.13 So the LORD did according to the word of Moses, and the frogs died out of the houses, out of the villages and out of the fields.14 And they gathered them together into heaps. And the land stank.15 But when Pharaoh saw that there was l relief, he m hardened his heart and did not hearken to them as the LORD had said.¶16 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Stretch out your staff and smite the dust of the land so that it may become lice throughout all the land of Egypt.’”17 And they did so, for Aaron stretched out his hand with his staff and smote the dust of the earth, and n it became lice on man and on beast. All the dust of the land became lice throughout all the land of Egypt.18 Then the o magicians tried with their enchantments to bring forth lice, but they p could not. So there were lice on man and on beast.19 Then the magicians said to Pharaoh, “This is the q finger of God.” And Pharaoh’s r heart was hardened and he did not hearken to them, as the LORD had said.¶20 Then the LORD said to Moses, s “Rise up early in the morning and stand before Pharaoh as he comes out to the water. And say to him, ‘Thus says the LORD, t “Let my people go so that they may serve Me.”’”21 “For if you will not let My people go, behold, I will send swarms of flies on you and on your servants and on your people, and into your houses. And the houses of the Egyptians will be full of swarms of flies, and also the ground on which they are.”22 “And u I will sever in that day the land of v Goshen in which My people dwell so that no swarms of flies will be there, to the end that you may w know that I am the LORD in the midst of the x land.”23 “And I will put a division between My people and your people. Tomorrow this y sign will occur.”’”24 And the LORD did so. And there came a grievous z swarm of flies into the house of Pharaoh and into his servants’ houses and into all the land of Egypt. The land was wasted because of the swarm of flies.¶25 Then Pharaoh called for Moses and for Aaron, and said, “Go! Sacrifice to your God in the land.”26 And Moses said, “That would not be right, for we would be sacrificing the a abomination of the Egyptians to the LORD our God. If we sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians before their eyes, will they not stone us?”27 “We will go b three days’ journey into the wilderness and sacrifice to the LORD our God as c He will command us.”28 Then Pharaoh said, “I will let you go so that you may sacrifice to the LORD your God in the wilderness, only you will not go very far away. d Intercede for me.”29 And Moses said, “Behold, I go out from you and I will pray to the LORD that the swarms of flies may depart from Pharaoh, from his servants and from his people tomorrow. But do not let Pharaoh e deal deceitfully anymore in not letting the people go sacrifice to the LORD.”30 So Moses went out from Pharaoh and f entreated the LORD.31 And the LORD did according to the word of Moses. And He removed the swarms of flies from Pharaoh, from his servants and from his people, not one remained.32 But Pharaoh g hardened his heart at this time also. Neither would he let the people go.

Chapter 9 — The Plagues of Livestock Death, Boils, and Hail
1 ¶ Then the LORD said to Moses, a “Go to Pharaoh and tell him, ‘Thus says the LORD God of the Hebrews, “Let My people go so b that they may serve Me.”’”2 “For if you c refuse to let them go, and will continue to hold them,”3 “behold, the d hand of the LORD will be on your livestock that are in the field, on the horses, on the donkeys, on the camels, on the oxen and on the sheep. There will be a very severe pestilence.”4 “And e the LORD will make a distinction between the livestock of Israel and the livestock of Egypt. And nothing will die of all that belongs to the children of Israel.”5 Then the LORD appointed a set time, saying, “Tomorrow the LORD will do this thing in the land.”6 So the LORD did this thing on the next day, and f all the livestock of Egypt died. But not one died of the livestock of the children of Israel.7 Then Pharaoh sent, and behold, there was not one of the livestock of the Israelites dead. So the g heart of Pharaoh was hardened and he did not let the people go.¶8 Then the LORD said to Moses and to Aaron, “Take for yourselves handfuls of ashes from the furnace and let Moses sprinkle it toward the sky in the sight of Pharaoh.9 “And it will become fine dust in all the land of Egypt, and will become h boils breaking out with sores on man, and on beast throughout all the land of Egypt.”10 So they took ashes from the furnace and stood before Pharaoh. And Moses sprinkled it up toward the sky, and it became i boils breaking out with sores on man and on beast.11 And the j magicians could not stand before Moses because of the k boils, for the boils were on the magicians and on all the Egyptians.12 And the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh, and he l did not hearken to them just as the LORD had spoken to Moses.¶13 Then the LORD said to Moses, n “Rise up early in the morning and stand before Pharaoh and say to him, ‘Thus says the LORD God of the Hebrews, “Let My people go so that they may o serve Me.”’”14 “For I will at this time send all My plagues on your heart and on your servants, and on your people p so that you may know that there is no one like Me in all the earth.”15 “For now I will q stretch out My hand so that I may smite you and your people with r pestilence, and you will be cut off from the earth.”16 “And for this s very purpose I have raised you up, in order t to show in you My power, and that My u name may be declared throughout all the earth.”17 “Still you exalt yourself against My people in that you will not let them go.”18 “Behold, tomorrow about this time I will cause it to rain a very grievous hail, such as has not been in Egypt since it was founded until now.”19 “Send therefore now and gather your livestock and all that you have in the field, for on every man and beast that will be found in the field, and will not be brought home, the hail will come down on them and they will die.”20 He who v feared the word of the LORD among the w servants of Pharaoh made his servants and his livestock flee into the houses.21 And he who did not regard the word of the LORD left his servants and his livestock in the field.¶22 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward heaven so that there may be x hail in all the land of Egypt, on man and on beast and on every plant of the field, throughout the land of Egypt.”23 So Moses stretched out his staff toward heaven. And y the LORD sent thunder and hail, and the fire ran along on the ground. And the LORD rained hail on the land of Egypt.24 So there was a very severe hail and fire mingled with the hail, such as had not been in all the land of Egypt since it became a nation.25 And the z hail struck throughout all the land of Egypt all that was in the field, both man and beast. And the hail struck every plant of the field and broke every tree of the field.26a1 Only in the land of Goshen where the children of Israel were, there was no hail.27 ¶ Then Pharaoh sent and b1 called for Moses and Aaron and said to them, c1 “I have sinned this time. d1 The LORD is righteous and I and my people are wicked.”28e1 “Pray to the LORD so that there be no more mighty thunderings and hail, for it is enough. I will let you f1 go and you will stay no longer.”29 And Moses said to him, “As soon as I am gone out of the city, I will g1 spread abroad my hands to the LORD and the thunder will cease, nor will there be anymore hail so that you may know that the h1 earth is the Lord’s.”30 “But as for you and your servants, i1 I know that you will not yet fear the LORD God.”31 Now the flax and the j1 barley was struck, for the barley was in the ear and the flax was in bud.32 But the wheat and the spelt were not struck, for they were not grown up.33 So Moses went out of the city from Pharaoh and k1 spread out his hands to the LORD. And the thunders and hail ceased, and the rain was not poured on the earth.34 And when Pharaoh saw that the rain and the hail and the thunders had ceased, he sinned again and hardened his heart, he and his servants.35 And the l1 heart of Pharaoh was hardened. He would not let the children of Israel go just as the LORD had spoken by Moses.

Chapter 10 — The Plagues of Locusts and Darkness
1 ¶ Then the LORD said to Moses, “Go in to Pharaoh, for a I have hardened his heart and the heart of his servants b so that I might show these signs of Mine before him,”2 “and that c you may tell in the ears of your son, and of your son’s son what things I have done in Egypt, and My signs that I have done among them so that you may d know that I am the LORD.”3 ¶ So Moses and Aaron came in to Pharaoh and said to him, “Thus says the LORD God of the Hebrews, ‘How long will you refuse to e humble yourself before Me? Let My people go so that they may f serve Me.’”4 ‘For if you refuse to let My people go, behold, tomorrow I will bring the g locusts into your territory.’5 ‘And they will cover the face of the land so that one will not be able to see the land. h And they will eat the rest of what has escaped, which remains to you from the hail. And they will eat every tree that grows for you out of the field.’6 ‘Then they will i fill your houses and the houses of all your servants, and the houses of all the Egyptians which neither your fathers nor your fathers’ fathers have seen since the day that they were on the earth to this day.’ And he turned himself and went out from Pharaoh.7 Then Pharaoh’s j servants said to him, “How long will this man be a k snare to us? Let the men go so that they may serve the LORD their God. Do you not know that all Egypt is destroyed?”8 So Moses and Aaron were brought again to Pharaoh. And he said to them, “Go, serve the LORD your God. Who are they who will go?”9 And Moses said, “We will go with our young and with our old, with our sons and with our daughters, with our flocks and with our herds, for l we must hold a feast to the LORD.”10 Then he said to them, “The LORD had better be with you when I let you and your little ones go, for evil is before you.”11 “Not so! Go now you who are men and serve the LORD, for that is what you desired.” And they were driven out from Pharaoh’s presence.12 ¶ Then the LORD said to Moses, n “Stretch out your hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts so that they may come up on the land of Egypt, and o eat every plant of the land, even all that the hail has left.”13 So Moses stretched forth his staff over the land of Egypt, and the LORD brought an east wind on the land all that day and all that night. Now when it was morning, the east wind brought the locusts.14 And the p locusts went up over all the land of Egypt and rested in all the territory of Egypt. They were very grievous. Before them there q had never been so many locusts, nor after them would there be so many.15 For they r covered the face of the whole land so that the land was darkened. And they s ate every plant of the land and all the fruit of the trees that the hail had left. And there did not remain any green thing in the trees or in the plants of the field throughout all the land of Egypt.16 ¶ Then Pharaoh hurriedly called t for Moses and Aaron. And he said, u “I have sinned against the LORD your God and against you.17 “Now therefore please forgive my sin only this once and v entreat the LORD your God so that He may only take away from me this death.”18 So he w went out from Pharaoh and entreated the LORD.19 And the LORD turned a mighty strong west wind that took away the locusts and cast them x into the Red Sea. Not one locust remained in all the territory of Egypt.20 But the LORD y hardened Pharaoh’s heart so that he would not let the children of Israel go.¶21 Then the LORD said to Moses, z “Stretch out your hand toward heaven so that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even darkness that may be felt.”22 So Moses stretched out his hand toward heaven and there was a a1 thick darkness in all the land of Egypt b1 three days.23 They did not see one another, nor did anyone rise from his place for three days. c1 But all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.24 ¶ Then Pharaoh called to Moses and said, d1 “Go! Serve the LORD. Only let your flocks and your herds be detained. Let your e1 little ones also go with you.”25 And Moses said, “You must give us also sacrifices and burnt offerings so that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God.26 “Our f1 livestock also will go with us. Not a hoof will be left behind, for we must take some of them to serve the LORD our God. And even we do not know with what we must serve the LORD until we arrive there.”27 ¶ But the LORD g1 hardened Pharaoh’s heart and he would not let them go.28 So Pharaoh said to him, h1 “Get away from me! Take heed to yourself and see my face no more, for in the day you see my face you will die!”29 Then Moses said, “You have spoken well. i1 I will never see your face again.”

Chapter 11 — The Plague on the Firstborn
1 ¶ Then the LORD said to Moses, “Once more I will bring one plague on Pharaoh and on Egypt. a Afterwards he will let you go from here. b When he lets you go, he will surely thrust you out from here completely.”2 “Speak now in the ears of the people and let every man ask from his neighbor and every woman from her neighbor, c jewels of silver and jewels of gold.”3d So the LORD gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians. Furthermore, the man e Moses was very great in the land of Egypt, in the sight of Pharaoh’s servants and in the sight of the people.4 And Moses said, “Thus says the LORD, f ‘About midnight I will go out into the midst of Egypt.’”5 ‘And all the g firstborn in the land of Egypt will die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sits on his throne, even to the firstborn of the female servant who is behind the mill, and all the firstborn of the animals.’6h ‘And there will be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, such as there has not been before and i such as will never be again.’7j ‘But against none of the children of Israel k will a dog move its tongue, against man or animal, so that you may know how the LORD makes a difference between the Egyptians and Israel.’8 “And l all these your servants will come down to me and bow down themselves to me, saying, ‘Get out, and all the people that follow you,’ and after that I will go out.” m And he went out from Pharaoh in a great anger.9 Then the LORD said to Moses, n “Pharaoh will not hearken to you, so that o My wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt.”10 So Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh. And the p LORD hardened Pharaoh’s heart so that he would not let the children of Israel go out of his land.

Chapter 12 — The Passover
1 ¶ Now the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying,2a “This month will be to you the beginning of months. It will be the first month of the year to you.”3 “Speak to all the assembly of Israel, saying, ‘On the b tenth day of this month each man will take a lamb for himself, according to the house of his fathers, a lamb for each house.’”4 “And if the household is too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbor next to his house take it according to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating will make your count for the lamb.”5 “Your lamb will be c without blemish, a male of the first year. You will take it out from the sheep or from the goats.”6 “And you will keep it until the d fourteenth day of the same month. And the whole assembly of Israel will kill it in the evening.”7 “And they will take of the blood and put it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses in which they eat it.”8 “And they will eat the meat in that e night, f roasted with fire. And they will eat it with g unleavened bread and bitter herbs.”9 “Do not eat of it raw, nor boiled at all with water. But h roast it with fire, his head with his legs and with its entrails.”10i “And you will leave none of it until the morning. And that which remains of it until the morning, you will burn with fire.”11 “And in this manner you will eat it: with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet and your staff in your hand. You will eat it in haste. j It is the LORD’S Passover.”12 “For I k will pass through the land of Egypt this night and will strike down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast. And I will execute judgment l against all the gods of Egypt. m I am the LORD.”13 “And the blood will be to you for a token on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague will not be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.”14 “So this day will be n a memorial to you. And you will keep it as a o feast to the LORD throughout your generations. You will keep it as a feast p by an ordinance forever.”15q “Seven days you will eat unleavened bread. But on the first day you will put away leaven out of your houses, for whoever eats leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, r that person will be cut off from Israel.”16 “And in the first day there will be s a holy assembly, and also in the seventh day there will be a holy assembly to you. No manner of work will be done on them, except that which every man must eat. That only may be done by you.”17 “And you will observe the feast of unleavened bread, for t on this very day I brought your armies u out of the land of Egypt. Therefore, you will observe this day throughout your generations as an ordinance forever.”18v “In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at evening, you will eat unleavened bread until the twenty-first day of the month at evening.”19w “Seven days there will be no leaven found in your houses; for whoever eats that which is leavened, even that person will be cut off from the assembly of Israel, whether he is a foreigner or born in the land.”20 “You will eat nothing leavened. In all your habitations, you will eat unleavened bread.”

Chapter 13 — Dedication of the Firstborn
1 ¶ Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,2a “Sanctify to Me all the firstborn. Whoever opens the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of animal, is Mine.”3 ¶ So Moses said to the people, b “Remember this day in which you came out from Egypt, out of the house of bondage. For c by strength of hand the LORD brought you out from this place. There will be d no leavened bread eaten.”4e “On this day in the month Abib you came out.”5 “And it will be when the LORD will f bring you into the g land of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, that He h swore to your fathers to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey, i that you will keep this service in this month.”6j “Seven days you will eat unleavened bread. And on the seventh day there will be a feast to the LORD.”7 “Unleavened bread will be eaten seven days. And there will be k no leavened bread among you, nor will there be leaven seen with you in all your borders.”8 “And you will l tell your son in that day, saying, ‘This is done because of what the LORD did to me when I came forth out of Egypt.’”9 “And it will be for m a sign to you on your hand and for a memorial between your eyes, that the Lord’s law may be in your mouth. For with a strong hand the LORD brought you out of Egypt.”10n “Therefore, you will keep this ordinance in its season from year to year.”11 “And it will be when the LORD o brings you into the land of the p Canaanites, as He swore to you and to your fathers, and will give it to you,”12q “that you will set apart to the LORD all that opens the womb and every first offspring that comes from an animal that you have; the males will be the LORD’S.”13 “And r every first offspring of a donkey you will redeem with a lamb. And if you will not redeem it, then you will break its neck. And s you will redeem all the firstborn of man among your children.”14 “And it will be when your son asks you in time to come, saying, ‘What is this?’ that you will say to him, t ‘By strength of hand the LORD brought us out of Egypt, from the house of bondage. u It came to pass when Pharaoh was stubborn to let us go, that v the LORD killed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man and the firstborn of beast. Therefore, I sacrifice to the LORD all the males that open the womb. But I redeem all the firstborn of my children.’”16 “And it will be for a w sign on your hand and for phylacteries between your eyes. For by strength of hand the LORD brought us forth out of Egypt.”
Crossing the Red Sea
17 ¶ Now it came to pass when Pharaoh had let the people go that God did not lead them through the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near, for God said, “Lest perhaps the people x change their minds when they see war and y return to Egypt.”18 But God z led the people around the way of the wilderness of the Red Sea. And the children of Israel went up out of the land of Egypt armed for battle.19 And Moses took the a bones of b Joseph with him, for he had made the children of Israel solemnly swear, saying, c “God will surely visit you, and you will carry up my bones with you away from here.”20 So d they set out on their journey from e Succoth and camped in Etham on the edge of the wilderness.21 And f the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud in order to lead them on the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, in order to travel by day and night.22 He did not take away before the people the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night.

Chapter 14 — Crossing the Red Sea
1 ¶ Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,2 “Speak to the children of Israel a so that they turn back and camp near b Pihahiroth, between c Migdol and the sea. They are to camp by the sea, directly opposite Baal Zephon.”3 “For Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel, d ‘They are entangled in the land. The wilderness has shut them in.’”4 “Then e I will harden Pharaoh’s heart so that he will follow after them. And f I will be honored through Pharaoh and all his army g so that the Egyptians may know that I am the LORD.” And they did so.5 ¶ Now it was told to the king of Egypt that the people fled. And the h heart of Pharaoh and of his bondservants was turned against the people. And they said, “Why have we done this, that we have let Israel go from serving us?”6 So he made ready his chariot and took his people with him.7 And he took i six hundred chosen chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt, and captains over each one of them.8 So the LORD j hardened the heart of Pharaoh, king of Egypt. And he pursued after the children of Israel. And k the children of Israel boldly went out.9 But the l Egyptians pursued after them, all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, and his horsemen and his army. And they overtook them camping by the sea, beside Pihahiroth in front of Baal Zephon.10 ¶ Now when Pharaoh drew close, the children of Israel lifted up their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians marched after them. And they were very afraid. So the children of Israel m cried out to the LORD.11n And they said to Moses, “Because there were no graves in Egypt, have you taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you dealt with us in this way, to carry us out of Egypt?”12o “Is not this the word that we told you in Egypt, saying, ‘Let us alone so that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.”13 Then Moses said to the people, p “Do not fear! q Stand still and see the r salvation of the LORD that He will show you today. For the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you will never s see them again forever.”14 “The LORD will fight for you and you will u hold your peace.”15 ¶ Then the LORD said to Moses, “Why do you cry out to Me? Speak to the children of Israel so that they go forward.”16 “Now v lift up your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it. And the children of Israel will go on dry land through the midst of the sea.”17 “And behold, I will w harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they will follow them. And I will x be honored through Pharaoh and all his army, through his chariots and through his horsemen.”18 “And the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD when I have been honored through Pharaoh, through his chariots and through his horsemen.”19 ¶ Then the angel of God y who went before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them. And the pillar of the cloud went from before their face and stood behind them.20 So it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel. It was a cloud of darkness to them, but it gave light by night to Israel, so that the one did not come near the other all that night.21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea. And the LORD caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night. And He z made the sea into dry land and the waters were a divided.22 And the b children of Israel went into the midst of the sea on the dry land. And the waters were c a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.23 Then the Egyptians pursued and went in after them into the midst of the sea, even all Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots and his horsemen.24 Now it came to pass that in the morning d watch that e the LORD looked on the army of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of the cloud. And He troubled the army of the Egyptians.25 And He took off their chariot wheels so that they drove them with difficulty. So the Egyptians said, “Let us flee from the face of Israel, for the LORD f fights for them against the Egyptians.”26 ¶ Then the LORD said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea so that the waters may come again on the Egyptians, on their chariots and on their horsemen.”27 So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea. And the sea g returned to its normal place when the morning appeared, while the Egyptians were fleeing into it. So the LORD h overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea.28 Then the i waters returned and covered the chariots and the horsemen, and all the army of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them. Not one of them remained.29 But the j children of Israel walked on dry land in the midst of the sea. And the waters were a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.30 ¶ Thus the LORD k saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians. And Israel l saw the Egyptians dead on the sea shore.31 And Israel saw the great work that the LORD did against the Egyptians. Then the people feared the LORD and m believed the LORD and His servant Moses.

Chapter 15 — Song of Moses and Miriam
1 Then a Moses and the children of Israel sang this song to the LORD, saying, “I will b sing to the LORD, for He has triumphed gloriously. The horse and his rider He has thrown into the sea.”2 “The LORD is my strength and c song, and He has become my salvation. He is my God and d I will praise Him; my e father’s God, and I f will exalt Him.”3 “The LORD is a g warrior. The LORD is His h name.”4 “i Pharaoh’s chariots and his army He has cast into the sea. j His chosen captains are also drowned in the Red Sea.”5 “The depths have covered them. k They sank into the bottom as a stone.”6 “Your l right hand, O LORD, has become glorious in power. Your right hand, O LORD, has dashed in pieces the enemy.”7 “And in the greatness of Your m excellency You have overthrown them who rose up against You. You sent forth n Your wrath which o consumed them as p stubble.”8 “And q with the blast of Your nostrils the waters were gathered together, r the floods stood upright as a heap, and the depths were congealed in the heart of the sea.”9 “s The enemy said, ‘I will pursue. I will overtake. I will t divide the spoil. My desire will be satisfied on them. I will draw my sword. My hand will destroy them.’”10 “You blew with Your wind. The sea covered them. They sank as lead in the mighty waters.”11 “u Who is like You among the gods, O LORD? Who is like You, v majestic in holiness, awesome in w praises, x doing wonders?”12 “You stretched out Your right hand and the earth swallowed them.”13 “You in Your mercy have y led forth the people You have redeemed. You have guided them in Your strength to z Your holy habitation.”14 “The a people will hear and be afraid. b Sorrow will take hold on the inhabitants of Philistia.”15 “c Then the d chiefs of Edom will be amazed. e The mighty men of Moab, trembling will take hold on them. f All the inhabitants of Canaan will g melt away.”16 “h Fear and dread will fall on them. By the greatness of Your arm they will i be motionless as a stone; until Your people pass over, O LORD, until the people pass over whom j You have purchased.”17 “You will bring them in and k plant them in the l mountain of Your inheritance, in the place, O LORD, that You have made for Your dwelling in the m sanctuary, O Lord, that Your hands have established.”18 “The n LORD will reign forever and ever.”19 For the o horse of Pharaoh went in with his chariots and with his horsemen into the sea. And the p LORD brought again the waters of the sea on them. But the children of Israel went on dry ground in the midst of the sea.20 ¶ Then Miriam the q prophetess, the r sister of Aaron, s took a timbrel in her hand. And all the women went out after her with t timbrels and with dances.21 And Miriam u answered them, v “Sing to the LORD, for He has triumphed gloriously. The horse and his rider He has thrown into the sea.”22 ¶ Then Moses brought Israel from the Red Sea and they went out into the wilderness of w Shur. And they went three days in the wilderness and found no x water.23 Now when they came to y Marah, they could not drink of the waters of Marah, for they were bitter. Therefore, the name of it was called Marah.24 And the people z murmured against Moses, saying, “What will we drink?”25 Then he cried to the LORD. And the LORD showed him a tree. a When he threw it into the waters, the waters were made sweet. There He b made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there c He tested them.26 And He said, d “If you will diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD your God, and will do what is right in His sight, and will give ear to His commandments, and keep all His statutes, I will put none of these e diseases on you that I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the LORD f who heals you.”27 ¶ g Then they came to Elim where there were twelve wells of water and seventy palm trees. And they camped there by the waters.

Chapter 16 — Manna and Quail
1 ¶ Then all the assembly of the children of Israel set out from a Elim and came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and b Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departure from the land of Egypt.2 And the whole assembly of the children of Israel c murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness.3 And the children of Israel said to them, d “Would to God we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt when we sat by the e meat pots and when we ate bread to the full. For you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”4 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain f bread from heaven for you. And the people will go out and gather a certain portion every day so that I may g test them, whether or not they will h walk in My law.”5 “And it will come to pass on the sixth day that they will prepare what they bring in. i And it will be twice as much as they gather daily.”6 So Moses and Aaron said to all the children of Israel, j “At evening you will know that the LORD has brought you out from the land of Egypt.”7 “And in the morning you will see the k glory of the LORD, for He l hears your murmurings against the LORD. And m what are we, that you murmur against us?”8 And Moses said, “This will happen when the LORD will give you in the evening meat to eat, and in the morning bread to the full, for the LORD hears your murmurings that you murmur against Him. And what are we? Your murmurings are not against us, but n against the LORD.”9 ¶ Then Moses spoke to Aaron, “Say to all the assembly of the children of Israel, o ‘Come near before the LORD, for He has heard your murmurings.’”10 Now it came to pass as Aaron spoke to the whole assembly of the children of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of the LORD p appeared in the cloud.11 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,12q “I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel. Speak to them, saying, r ‘At evening you will eat meat and s in the morning you will be filled with bread. And you will know that I am the LORD your God.’”13 ¶ So it came to pass that at evening the t quail came up and covered the camp. And in the morning there was a layer of u dew around the camp.14 And when the dew had evaporated, behold, on the surface of the wilderness there lay a v fine flakelike thing, fine as the w frost on the ground.15 And when the children of Israel saw it, they said to one another, “It is manna.” For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, x “This is the bread that the LORD has given you to eat.”16 “This is the thing that the LORD has commanded, ‘Gather of it y according to what each one should eat. Take an z omer for each person you have in your tent.’”17 And the children of Israel did so, and some gathered more and some less.18 And when they measured it with an omer, a he who gathered much had nothing left over and he who gathered little had no lack. They gathered each one according to his need.19 Then Moses said, “Let no man b leave any of it until the morning.”20 But they did not listen to Moses. Some of them left some of it until the morning. And it bred worms and stank. And Moses was angry with them.21 So they gathered it every morning, everyone according to his eating. And when the sun grew hot, it melted.22 ¶ Now it came to pass on the sixth day that they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for one person. And all the rulers of the assembly came and told Moses.23 Then he said to them, “This is what the LORD has said, ‘Tomorrow is the c rest of the holy Sabbath to the LORD. Bake what you will bake today, and boil what you will boil. And what remains over lay aside to be kept until the morning.’”24 So they laid it aside until the morning, as Moses instructed. And it did not d stink, nor was there any worm in it.25 And Moses said, “Eat that today, for today is a Sabbath to the LORD. Today you will not find it in the field. e Six days you will gather it. But on the seventh day, which is the Sabbath, there will be none.”26 Then it came to pass that some of the people went out on the seventh day in order to gather. And they found none.27 Now the LORD said to Moses, “How long f do you refuse to keep My commandments and My laws? See, the LORD has given you the Sabbath. Therefore, He gives you on the sixth day the bread for two days. Remain every man in his place and let no one go out of his place on the seventh day.”30 So the people rested on the seventh day.31 And the house of Israel named it manna. And g it was white like coriander seed. And the taste of it was like wafers made with honey.32 ¶ Then Moses said, “This is the thing that the LORD commands, ‘Fill an omer of it to be kept for your generations so that they may see the bread with which I have fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you forth out from the land of Egypt.’”33 So Moses said to Aaron, h “Take a pot and put an omer full of manna in it and lay it before the LORD to be kept for your generations.”34 As the LORD commanded Moses, so Aaron laid it up i before the Testimony to be kept.35 And the children of Israel j ate manna k forty years, l until they came to an inhabited land. They ate manna until they came to the borders of the land of Canaan.36 (Now an omer is the tenth part of an ephah.)

Chapter 17 — Water from a Rock and Defeat of the Amalekites
1 ¶ Now a all the assembly of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of b Sin from place to place, according to the commandment of the LORD. And they pitched in Rephidim. And there was no water for the people to c drink.2d Therefore, the people quarreled with Moses, and said, “Give us water so that we may drink.” And Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you e tempt the LORD?”3 But the people thirsted there for water. And they f murmured against Moses, and said, “Why is this that you have brought us up out of Egypt in order to kill us and our children and our g livestock with thirst?”4 So Moses h cried to the LORD, saying, “What will I do with this people? They are almost ready to i stone me.”5 Then the LORD said to Moses, j “Go before the people. Take with you some of the elders of Israel and take in your hand your staff with which k you smote the Nile River, and go.”6l “Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb. And you will smite the rock and there will come water out of it so that the people may drink.” And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.7 So he called the name of the place m Massah and Meribah, because of the quarrel of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the LORD, saying, “Is the LORD among us, or not?”8 ¶ n Then Amalek came and fought with Israel in Rephidim.9 So Moses said to Joshua, “Choose out men for us and go out. Fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the o staff of God in my hand.”10 So Joshua did as Moses had said to him and fought with Amalek. And Moses, Aaron and Hur went up to the top of the hill.11 Now it came to pass when Moses p held up his hand that Israel prevailed. And when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.12 But Moses’ hands were heavy. And they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. And Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and the other on the other side. So his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.13 And Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.14 ¶ Then the LORD said to Moses, q “Write this for a memorial in a book and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua. For r I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.”15 And Moses built an altar and called the name of it The LORD is My Banner,16 for he said, “Because the LORD has s sworn. The LORD will make war with Amalek from generation to generation.”

Chapter 18 — Jethro Visits Moses
1 ¶ And a Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father-in-law, heard of all that b God had done for Moses and for Israel his people, and that the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt.2 After Moses had sent away his wife c Zipporah, his father-in-law, Jethro, received her and3 her d two sons, of whom the name of the one was Gershom, for Moses said, e “I have been a sojourner in a foreign land.”4 And the name of the other was Eliezer, for he said, “The God of my father was my f help, and He delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh.”5 Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife to Moses into the wilderness, where he camped at the g mountain of God.6 And he said to Moses, “I, your father-in-law, Jethro, am coming to you with your wife and her two sons with her.”7 ¶ So Moses h went out to meet his father-in-law. And he bowed down and i kissed him. And they asked each other about their welfare. And they came into the tent.8 Then Moses told his father-in-law all that the LORD had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel’s sake, and all the hardship that had come on them on the journey, and how the LORD had j delivered them.9 And Jethro rejoiced over all the k goodness that the LORD had done to Israel, whom He had delivered out of the hand of the Egyptians.10 Then Jethro said, l “Blessed be the LORD who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of Pharaoh, who has delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.11 “Now I know that the LORD is m greater than all gods, n because He did this to those who had treated Israel o arrogantly.”12 Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took a burnt p offering and sacrifices for God, and Aaron came and all the elders of Israel, q to eat bread with Moses’ father-in-law before God.13 ¶ Now it came to pass on the next day that Moses r sat to judge the people. And the people stood by Moses from the morning to the evening.14 And when Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he did for the people, he said, “What is this thing that you do for the people? Why do you sit alone and all the people stand around you from morning until evening?”15 And Moses said to his father-in-law, “Because s the people come to me to inquire of God.16 “When they t have a matter, they come to me and I judge between the parties. And I make known to them the statutes of God and His laws.”17 Then Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “The thing that you are doing is not good.18 “You will surely wear away, both you and this people who are with you, for this thing is too heavy for you. u You are not able to do it by yourself.19 “Now listen to my voice. I will give you counsel and God will be with you. You must be the people’s representative v before God so that you may w bring the disputes to God.20 “And you will x teach them ordinances and laws, and will show them the way in which they must walk and the y work that they must do.21 “Furthermore, you will provide out of all the people z able men who a fear God, b men of truth who c hate covetousness. Place such over them to be officials of thousands, officials of hundreds, officials of fifties, and officials of tens.22 “And let them judge the people at all times. d And it will be that every great matter they will bring to you, but every small matter they will judge. So it will be easier for yourself, and e they will bear the burden with you.23 “If you will do this thing, and God so commands you, then you will be able to endure, and all this people will also go to their f place in peace.”24 ¶ So Moses listened to the voice of his father-in-law, and did all that he had said.25 And g Moses chose able men out of all Israel and made them heads over the people, officials of thousands, officials of hundreds, officials of fifties and officials of tens.26 And they judged the people at all times. The h hard cases they brought to Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.27 Then Moses let his father-in-law depart. And i he went his way into his own land.

Chapter 19 — Israel at Mount Sinai
1 ¶ In the third month after the children of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt, the same day a they came to the wilderness of Sinai.2 When they departed from b Rephidim, they came to the wilderness of Sinai and camped in the wilderness. And Israel camped there before the c mountain.3 Then d Moses went up to God, and the LORD e called to him out of the mountain, saying, “Thus will you say to the house of Jacob and tell the children of Israel:4f ‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians and how g I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself.5 ‘Now therefore, h if you will indeed obey My voice and i keep My covenant, then j you will be My own possession above all people, for all the earth is k Mine.6 ‘And you will be to Me a l kingdom of priests and a m holy nation.’ These are the words that you will speak to the children of Israel.”7 ¶ So Moses came and called for the n elders of the people and laid before them all these words that the LORD had commanded him.8 And o all the people answered together and said, “We will do all that the LORD has spoken.” And Moses brought back the words of the people to the LORD.9 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I will come to you p in a thick cloud so q that the people may hear when I speak with you and believe you forever.” And Moses told the words of the people to the LORD.10 ¶ And the LORD said to Moses, “Go to the people and r sanctify them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their clothes.11 “And be ready for the third day, for the third day the LORD will come down in the sight of all the people on Mount Sinai.”12 “And you will set bounds for the people around about, saying, ‘Take heed to yourselves that you do not go up into the mountain or touch the border of it. s Whoever touches the mountain will surely be put to death.’”13 ‘No hand will touch him, but he will surely be stoned or shot through; whether it is an animal or a man, it will not live.’ When the trumpet sounds long, they will come up to the mountain.”14 ¶ So Moses went down from the mountain to the people and sanctified the people, and they washed their clothes.15 Then he said to the people, “Be ready for the third day. t Do not go near your wives.”16 ¶ Now it came to pass on the third day in the morning that there were u thunderings and lightnings and a thick cloud on the mountain, and the voice of the trumpet exceedingly loud, so that all the people who were in the camp v trembled.17 And w Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain.18 And x Mount Sinai was covered with smoke because the LORD had descended on y it in fire. And the z smoke ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the a whole mountain quaked greatly.19 And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long and became louder and louder, b Moses spoke, and c God answered him by a voice.20 Then the LORD came down on Mount Sinai, on the top of the mountain. And the LORD called Moses up to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up.21 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Go down and warn the people lest they break through to the LORD d to gaze, and many of them perish.”22 “And let the e priests also who come near to the LORD f sanctify themselves, lest the LORD g break forth on them.”23 Then Moses said to the LORD, “The people cannot come up to Mount Sinai, for You warned us, saying, h ‘Set bounds around the mountain and sanctify it.’”24 And the LORD said to him, “Go down and come up again, you and Aaron with you. But do not let the priests and the people break through to come up to the LORD, lest He break forth on them.”25 So Moses went down to the people and spoke to them.

Chapter 20 — The Ten Commandments
1 ¶ Then God spoke a all these words, saying,2b “I am the LORD your God who brought you c out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.3d “You will have no other gods before Me.”4 ¶ e “You will not make for yourself any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.5f “You will not bow down yourself to them, nor serve them, g for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, h visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate Me,6 “and i showing mercy to thousands of those who love Me and keep My commandments.”7 ¶ j “You will not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD k will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.”8 ¶ l “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.9m “Six days you will labor and do all your work,10 “But the n seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you will not do any work—you, nor your son, nor your daughter, your manservant, nor your maidservant, nor your livestock, nor your o foreigner who is within your gates.11 “For in p six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and He rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.”12 ¶ q “Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be r long in the land that the LORD your God gives you.”13 ¶ s “You will not kill.”14 ¶ t “You will not u commit adultery.”15 ¶ v “You will not steal.”16 ¶ w “You will not bear false witness against your neighbor.”17 ¶ x “You will not covet your neighbor’s house. y You will not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.”18 ¶ Now z all the people a saw the thunderings, the lightning flashes, the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain b smoking. And when the people saw it, they trembled and stood afar off.19 Then they said to Moses, c “Speak to us and we will hear, d but do not let God speak to us, or we will die.”20 So Moses said to the people, e “Do not fear, f for God has come to test you, that g His fear may be before you, so that you do not sin.”21 And the people stood afar off, but Moses drew near to the h thick darkness where God was.
Idols and Altars
22 ¶ Then the LORD said to Moses, “Thus you will say to the children of Israel: ‘You have seen that I have talked with you i from heaven.23 ‘You will not make other gods j besides Me. Do not make for yourselves gods of silver or gods of gold.’24 ‘You will make an altar of k earth for Me, and you will sacrifice your burnt offerings and your peace offerings—l your sheep and your oxen. In all m places where I record My name, I will come to you and n bless you.’25 ‘And o if you make an altar of stone for Me, you will not build it of cut stone, for if you p lift up your tool upon it, you have defiled it.’26 ‘Neither will you go up by steps to My altar, that your q nakedness may not be exposed on it.’

Chapter 21 — Judgments and Laws
1 ¶ “Now these are the judgments that you will a set before them.
Jewish Servants
2b “If you buy a Hebrew servant, he will serve for six years. And in the seventh year, he will go out free without payment.3 “If he comes in by himself, he will go out by himself. If he is married, then his wife will go out with him.”4 “If his master has given him a wife, and she bears him sons or daughters, the wife and her children will be her master’s, and he will go out by himself.”5c “But if the servant will plainly say, ‘I love my master, my wife, and my children. I will not go out free,’6 “then his master will bring him to the d judges. He will also bring him to the door or to the doorpost, and his master will pierce his ear through with an awl. And he will serve him for life.”7 ¶ “And if a man e sells his daughter to be a maidservant, she will not go out as the menservants do.”8 “If she does not please her master who has betrothed her to himself, then he will let her be redeemed. He does not have the right to sell her to foreigners because of his unfairness to her.”9 “And if he has betrothed her to his son, he will deal with her according to the custom of daughters.”10 “If he takes to himself another wife, he must not diminish the first one of her food, clothing, and f conjugal rights.”11 “And if he does not do these three things for her, then she will go out free without payment of money.”
Injury to Persons
12 ¶ g “He who strikes a man so that he dies will surely be put to death.”13 “However, h if a man did not lie in wait for him, but God i delivered him into his hand, then j I will appoint you a place where he may flee.”14 ¶ “But if a man k schemes against his neighbor to slay him intentionally, l you will take him from My altar so that he may die.”15 ¶ “And he who strikes his father or his mother will surely be put to death.”16 ¶ m “And he who strikes a man and n sells him, or if he is o found in his hand, he will surely be put to death.”17 ¶ “And p he who curses his father or his mother will surely be put to death.”18 ¶ “And if men strive together and one strikes another with a stone or with his fist, and he does not die, but remains in his bed,19 “if he rises again and walks about q on his staff, then he who struck him will go unpunished. He will pay only for the loss of his time, and he will care for him until he is completely healed.”20 ¶ “And if a man strikes his servant or his maid with a staff, and he dies under his hand, he will surely be punished.”21 “However, if he survives a day or two, he will not be punished, for he is his r property.”22 ¶ “If men struggle and hurt a woman with child so that she gives birth prematurely, and yet there is no serious injury, he will surely be punished according as the woman’s husband will demand, and he will s pay as the judges determine.”23 “And if any further injury follows, then you will give life for life,”24t “eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,”25 “burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.”26 ¶ “And if a man strikes the eye of his servant, or the eye of his maid so that it perishes, he will let him go free to compensate for his eye.”27 “And if he knocks out his manservant’s tooth or his maidservant’s tooth, he will let him go free to compensate for his tooth.”28 ¶ “If an ox gores a man or a woman so that they die, then u the ox will surely be stoned, and his meat will not be eaten. But the owner of the ox will go unpunished.”29 “However, if the ox had a habit of goring with his horn, and his owner has been warned, but he has not kept it in, and it has killed a man or a woman, the ox will be stoned and his owner will also be put to death.”30 “If payment is demanded from him, he may v redeem his life by paying whatever is demanded from him.”31 “Whether he has gored a son or has gored a daughter, according to this rule it will be done to him.”32 “If the ox gores a manservant or a maidservant, he will give to their master w thirty shekels of silver, and the x ox will be stoned.”33 ¶ “And if a man opens a pit, or if a man digs a pit and does not cover it, and an ox or a donkey falls into it,”34 “the owner of the pit will make restitution and give money to the owner, and the dead animal will be his.”35 ¶ “And if one man’s ox hurts another’s so that it dies, then they will sell the live ox and divide the money from it, and they will also divide the dead ox.”36 “Or if it is known that the ox had a habit of goring, and his owner did not keep it in, he will surely pay ox for ox, and the dead ox will be his own.”

Security of Property
1 ¶ “If a man steals an ox or a sheep and kills it, or sells it, he will a restore five oxen for an ox and four sheep for a sheep.”2 “If a thief is found b breaking in and is struck so that he dies, there will c no blood be shed for him.”3 “If the sun has risen on him, he is guilty of bloodshed. He will make full restitution. If he has nothing, then he will d be sold for his theft.”4 “If the stolen possession is e found alive in his possession, whether it is ox or donkey or sheep, he will f restore double.”5 ¶ “If a man allows a field or a vineyard to be eaten, and allows his animal to stray and it feeds in another man’s field, he will make restitution from the best of his own field and the best of his own vineyard.”6 ¶ “If fire breaks out and spreads into thornbushes so that the stacks of grain or the standing grain or the field is consumed, he who started the fire will surely make restitution.”7 “If a man g gives to his neighbor money or possessions to keep, and it is stolen out of the man’s house, h if the thief is found, let him pay double.”8 “If the thief is not found, then the master of the house will be brought to the i judges to see whether he has laid his hand on his neighbor’s goods.”9 ¶ “For all manner of illegal possession of an ox, a donkey, a sheep, clothing, or any kind of lost thing that another challenges to be his, the j case of both parties will come before the judges. He whom the judges will condemn will pay double to his neighbor.”10 “If a man delivers to his neighbor a donkey, or an ox, or a sheep, or any animal to keep, and it dies or is hurt, or driven away while no one is looking,”11 “then an k oath of the LORD will be made between them both that he has not laid his hand on his neighbor’s goods. And the owner will accept it and he will not make restitution.”12 “And l if it is stolen from him, he will make restitution to the owner.”13 “If it is torn in pieces, then let him bring it for evidence. He will not make restitution for what was torn.”14 ¶ “And if a man borrows anything from his neighbor and it is injured or dies while the owner is not with it, he will surely make restitution.”15 “But if the owner is with it, he will not make restitution. If it is hired, the restitution comes from its hire.”
Social Responsibilities
16 ¶ “And if a man n seduces a virgin who is not promised to be married, and lies with her, he will surely pay the dowry for her to be his wife.”17 “If her father utterly refuses to give her to him, he will pay money according to the o dowry of virgins.”18 ¶ p “You will not suffer a witch to live.”19 ¶ q “Whoever lies with an animal will surely be put to death.”20 ¶ r “He who sacrifices to any god, except to the LORD only, he will be utterly destroyed.”21 ¶ s “You will neither wrong a foreigner, nor oppress him, for you were foreigners in the land of Egypt.”22 ¶ t “You will not afflict any widow or fatherless child.”23 “If you afflict them in any way, and they u cry out at all to Me, I will surely v hear their cry.”24 “And My w wrath will be kindled. And I will kill you with the sword, and x your wives will be widows and your children fatherless.”25 ¶ y “If you lend money to any of my people who are poor among you, you will not be to him as a creditor, nor will you charge him z interest.”26a “If you at all take your neighbor’s clothing as a pledge, you will deliver it to him before the sun goes down,”27 “for that is his only covering. It is his clothing for his body. What else will he sleep in? And it will come to pass when he cries out to Me, that I will hear, for I am b gracious.”28 ¶ “You will not blaspheme God, nor curse the c ruler of your people.”29 “You will not delay to offer the d first of your ripe fruits and of your vintage. Laws of Justice and Mercy
1 ¶ a “You will not spread false reports. Do not join your hand with the wicked to be an b unrighteous witness.”2c “You will not follow a multitude to do evil. d Neither will you speak in a dispute so as to side with the multitude to pervert justice.”3 “Neither will you be partial to a e poor man in his dispute.”4 ¶ f “If you meet your enemy’s ox or his donkey going astray, you will surely bring it back to him again.”5g “If you see the donkey of him who hates you lying helpless under his burden, and you would refrain from helping it, you will surely help it for him.”6 ¶ h “You will not deny the justice to your poor in their disputes.”7i “Keep far from a false matter. And j do not kill the innocent and righteous, for k I will not justify the wicked.”8 “And l you will take no bribe, for the bribe blinds the wise and perverts the words of the righteous.”9 “Also you will not oppress a foreigner, for you know the heart of a foreigner, seeing you were foreigners in the land of Egypt.”
Sabbath Laws
10 ¶ n “For six years you will sow your land and will gather in its fruits.”11 “But the seventh year you will let it rest and lie still so that the poor of your people may eat. And what they leave, the animals of the field will eat. In like manner you will deal with your vineyard and with your olive grove.”12o “Six days you will do your work, and on the seventh day you will rest so that your ox and your donkey may rest, and the son of your handmaid and the foreigner may be refreshed.”13 “And in all things that I have said p be careful to keep. And q make no mention of the name of other gods, nor let them be heard from your mouth.”14 ¶ r “Three times a year you will keep a feast to Me.”15s “You will keep the feast of unleavened bread. Chapter 24 — Reconfirming the Covenant
1 ¶ Then He said to Moses, “You and Aaron, a Nadab and Abihu, and b seventy of the elders of Israel, come up to the LORD and worship at a distance.”2 “And Moses alone will come near the LORD. But they will not come near, nor will the people go up with him.”3 ¶ Then Moses came and told the people all the words of the LORD and all the judgments. And all the people answered with one voice and said, c “All the words that the LORD has said we will do.”4 So Moses d wrote all the words of the LORD. And he rose up early in the morning and built an altar under the mountain with e twelve pillars representing the twelve tribes of Israel.5 Then he sent young men of the children of Israel who offered f burnt offerings and sacrificed peace offerings of oxen to the LORD.6 And Moses g took half of the blood and put it in basins. And he sprinkled half of the blood on the altar.7 Then he h took the book of the covenant and read in the audience of the people. And they said, “All that the LORD has said we will do. And we will be obedient.”8 So Moses took the blood and sprinkled it on the people. And he said, “Behold the i blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you concerning all these words.”9 ¶ Then Moses went up with Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel.10 And they j saw the God of Israel. And under His feet there appeared to be a pavement of k sapphire stone as l clear as the sky itself.11 But God did not stretch out His hand against the nobles of the children of Israel. And n they saw God. And they o ate and drank.12 ¶ Then the LORD said to Moses, p “Come up to me into the mountain and remain there. And I will give you q tablets of stone and a law and commandments that I have written so that you may teach them.”13 So Moses rose up with his r assistant Joshua. And Moses went up into the mountain of God.14 And he said to the elders, “You wait here for us until we come again to you. And behold, Aaron and s Hur are with you. If any man has any matters to do, let him approach them.”15 So Moses went up onto the mountain and a t cloud covered the mountain.16 And the u glory of the LORD rested on Mount Sinai and the cloud covered it six days. And the seventh day He called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud.17 In the eyes of the children of Israel the sight of the glory of the LORD was like v devouring fire on the top of the mountain.18 Then Moses entered the cloud as he went on up the mountain. And w Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights.

It is a sin offering.”15 ¶ “You will also take one ram, and Aaron and his sons will q put their hands on the head of the ram.”16 “Then you will slay the ram. And you will take its blood and r sprinkle it around on the altar.”17 “Then you will cut the ram in pieces and wash its entrails and its legs, and put them with its pieces and its head.”18 “And you will burn the whole ram on the altar. It is a s burnt offering to the LORD. It is a sweet aroma, an offering made by fire to the LORD.”19 ¶ “And you will take the other ram, and Aaron and his sons will put their hands on the head of the ram.”20 “Then you will kill the ram and take some of its blood and put it on the tip of the right ear of Aaron and on the tip of the right ear of his sons and on the thumb of their right hand and on the great toe of their right foot, and sprinkle the blood around on the altar.”21 “And you will take of the blood that is on the altar and some of the u anointing oil, and sprinkle it on Aaron and on his garments and on his sons and on the garments of his sons with him. And v he will be consecrated, as well as his garments and his sons and his sons’ garments with him.”22 “You also will take of the ram the fat and the rump and the fat that covers the entrails and the lobe of the liver, and the two kidneys and the fat that is on them, and the right thigh (for it is a ram of consecration),”23 “and one loaf of bread and one cake of oiled bread and one wafer out of the basket of the unleavened bread that is before the LORD;24 “and you will put all these in the hands of Aaron and in the hands of his sons. And you will wave them for a x wave offering before the LORD.”25 “Then you will take them from their hands and burn them on the altar for a burnt offering, for a sweet aroma before the LORD. It is an offering made by fire to the LORD.”26 “And you will take the z breast of the ram of Aaron’s consecration and wave it for a wave offering before the LORD. And it will be your portion.”27 “And you will sanctify the a breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the heave offering which is waved and that is offered up from the ram of the consecration, even of that which is for Aaron and from the one that is for his sons.”28 “And it will be Aaron’s and his sons’ by a b statute forever from the children of Israel, for it is a heave offering. And c it will be a heave offering from the children of Israel of the sacrifice of their peace offerings, even their heave offering to the LORD.”29 ¶ “And the d holy garments of Aaron e will be his sons’ after him, so that in them they may be f anointed and consecrated.”30 “And that son who is priest in his place will put them on h seven days when he comes into the tabernacle of the assembly to minister in the holy place.”31 ¶ “And you will take the ram of the consecration and i boil its flesh in the holy place.”32 “And Aaron and his sons will eat the flesh of the ram and the j bread that is in the basket by the door of the tabernacle of the assembly.”33 “And they will eat those things by which the atonement was made in order to consecrate and to sanctify them. But l foreigners will not eat from it because they are holy.”34 “And if any of the meat of the consecrations or of the bread remains until the morning, then you will burn the remainder with fire. It will not be eaten because it is holy.”35 ¶ “And thus you will do to Aaron and to his sons, according to all things that I have commanded you. You will consecrate them throughout n seven days.”36 “And you o will offer every day a bull for a sin offering for atonement. And p you will cleanse the altar when you have made atonement for it. And you will anoint it to sanctify it.”37 “Seven days you will make atonement for the altar and sanctify it. And it will be an altar most holy. q Whatever touches the altar will be holy.”38 ¶ “Now this is what you will offer on the altar: r two one-year old lambs s each day, continually.”39 “The one lamb you will offer t in the morning and the other lamb you will offer at evening;”40 “and with the one lamb one-tenth of an ephah of flour mingled with one-fourth part of a hin of beaten oil, and one-fourth part of a hin of wine for a drink offering.”41 “And the other lamb you will u offer at evening. And you will do with it according to the meat offering of the morning and according to the drink offering, for a sweet aroma, an offering made by fire to the LORD.”42 “This will be a v continual burnt offering throughout your generations at the door of the tabernacle of the assembly before the LORD. w There I will meet you, to speak to you there.”43 “And there I will meet with the children of Israel, and the tabernacle x will be sanctified by My glory.”44 “And I will sanctify the tabernacle of the assembly and the altar. I will y sanctify also both Aaron and his sons to minister to Me in the priest’s office.”45 “And I will dwell among the children of Israel and will a be their God.”46 “And they will know that b I am the LORD their God who c brought them forth out of the land of Egypt so that I may dwell among them. I am the LORD their God.”

Chapter 30 — The Altar of Incense
1 ¶ “And you will make an a altar of acacia wood on which to burn incense.”2 “It will be a cubit long and a cubit wide. It will be square. And its height will be two cubits. Its horns will be of the same piece.”4 “Then you will make two golden rings for it under its molding. You will make them on its two side walls, two on opposite sides. And they will be holders for poles with which to carry it.”5 “And you will make the poles of acacia wood, and overlay them with gold.”6 “Then you will put it before the b veil that is by the ark of the testimony, before the c mercy seat that is over the testimony, where I will meet with you.”7 “And Aaron will burn on it d fragrant incense every morning. When e he trims the lamps, he will burn incense on it.”8 “And when Aaron lights the lamps at evening, he will burn incense on it as a perpetual incense before the LORD throughout your generations.”9 “You will offer no f strange incense on it, nor burnt sacrifice, nor meat offering. Neither will you pour a drink offering on it.”10 “And g Aaron will make atonement on its horns once a year with the blood of the sin offering of atonements. Once in the year he will make atonement on it throughout your generations. It is most holy to the LORD.”11 ¶ Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,12h “When you take the census of the children of Israel after their number, then each man will give a i ransom for his soul to the LORD when you number them so that there be no j plague among them when you number them.”13k “This is what everyone who is numbered will give: half a shekel after the shekel of the sanctuary l (a shekel is twenty gerahs), m half a shekel will be an offering to the LORD.”14 “Everyone included among those who are numbered, from twenty years old and above, will give an offering to the Lord.”15 “The n rich will not give more and the poor will not give less than half a shekel when they give an offering to the LORD, to make atonement for your souls.”16 “And you will take the atonement money of the children of Israel and o will appoint it for the service of the tabernacle of the assembly so that it may be a p memorial to the children of Israel before the LORD, to make an atonement for your souls.”17 ¶ Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,18q “You will also make a laver of bronze, and its foot also of bronze, for washing. And r you will put it between the tabernacle of the assembly and the altar, and you will put water in it.”19 “For Aaron and his sons will s wash their hands and their feet in it.”20 “When they go into the tabernacle of the assembly they will wash with water so that they not die, or when they come near to the altar to minister, to burn an offering made by fire to the LORD.”21 “So they will wash their hands and their feet so that they not die. And t it will be a statute forever for them, for him and for his seed throughout their generations.”22 ¶ Furthermore, the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,23 “Take also for yourself u quality spices—five hundred shekels of v pure myrrh, and half as much sweet-smelling cinnamon (250 shekels), and 250 shekels of sweet-smelling w cane,”24 “and 500 shekels of x cassia, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, and a y hin of olive oil.”25 “And you will make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the perfumer. It will be a z holy anointing oil.”26a “And you will anoint the tabernacle of the assembly with it and the ark of the testimony,”27 “and the table and all its utensils, and the candlestick and its utensils, and the altar of incense,”28 “and the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the laver and its stand.”29 “Then you will sanctify them so that they may be most holy. b Whatever touches them will be holy.”30c “And you will anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them so that they may minister to Me in the priest’s office.”31 “And you will speak to the children of Israel, saying, ‘This will be a holy anointing oil to Me throughout your generations.’”32 “‘Do not pour it on man’s flesh. Neither will you make any other like it, after the composition of it. d It is holy and it will be holy to you.’”33 “‘Whoever will mix anything like it, or whoever puts any of it on a foreigner, e will be cut off from his people.’”34 ¶ Then the LORD said to Moses, g “Take for yourself sweet spices, stacte and onycha and galbanum, sweet spices with pure frankincense. There will be an equal portion of each.”35 “And you will make a perfume, a compound h after the art of a perfumer. It is to be salted and pure and sacred.”36 “Then you will beat some of it very fine and put part of it before the testimony in the tabernacle of the assembly i where I will meet with you. j It will be to you most holy.”37 “And as for the perfume that you will make, k you will not make for yourselves according to the composition of it. It will be to you holy for the LORD.”38l “Whoever will make anything like it, to use as perfume, will be cut off from his people.”

Chapter 31 — Bezaleel and Aholiab
1 ¶ Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,2a “See, I have called by name Bezaleel the b son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah.”3 “And I have c filled him with the Spirit of God in wisdom and in understanding and in knowledge and in all manner of workmanship,”4 “to make artistic designs, to work in gold and in silver and in bronze,”5 “and in cutting of stones, to set them, and in carving of timber, to work in all manner of workmanship.”6 “And behold, I have appointed with him d Aholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan. And in the hearts of all who are e skillful I have put wisdom so that they may make all that I have commanded you;7f “the tabernacle of the meeting, and the g ark of the testimony, and the h mercy seat that is on it, and all the furniture of the tabernacle,”8i “and the table and its furniture, and the j pure gold lampstand with all its furniture, and the altar of incense,”9k “and the altar of burnt offering with all its furniture, and the l laver and its stand,”10m “and the garments for service, and the holy garments for Aaron the priest, and the garments of his sons to minister in the priest’s office,”11n “and the anointing oil, and o sweet incense for the holy place; according to all that I have commanded you they will do.”12 ¶ Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,13 “Speak also to the children of Israel, saying, p ‘Surely My Sabbaths you will keep. For it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations so that you may know that I am the LORD who q sanctifies you.’”14r “‘Therefore, you will keep the Sabbath, for it is holy to you. Everyone who defiles it will surely be put to death. For s whoever does any work on it, that soul will be cut off from among his people.’”15t “‘Six days work may be done. But on the u seventh there is a Sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day, he will surely be put to death.’”16 “‘Therefore, the children of Israel will keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant.’”17 “‘It is a v sign between Me and the children of Israel forever. For in w six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed.’”18 ¶ And He gave to Moses x two tablets of testimony, tablets of stone, written with the finger of God, when He had made an end of communing with him on Mount Sinai.

Chapter 32 — The Golden Calf
1 ¶ When the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people gathered themselves together to Aaron, and said to him, “Up, make us gods who shall go before us; as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.”2 And Aaron said to them, “Take off the gold rings that are in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me.”3 So all the people took off the gold rings from their ears and brought them to Aaron.4 And he received the gold from their hand and fashioned it with a graving tool and made a golden calf. And they said, “These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!”5 When Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it. And Aaron made a proclamation and said, “Tomorrow shall be a feast to the LORD.”6 And they rose early the next day and offered burnt offerings and brought peace offerings. And the people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.7 ¶ And the LORD said to Moses, “Go down, for your people, whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves.8 They have turned aside quickly out of the way that I commanded them. They have made for themselves a molten calf and have worshiped it and sacrificed to it and said, ‘These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.’”9 And the LORD said to Moses, “I have seen this people, and behold, it is a stiff-necked people.10 Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them, in order that I may make a great nation of you.”11 But Moses implored the LORD his God and said, “O LORD, why does your wrath burn hot against your people, whom you have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand?12 Why should the Egyptians say, ‘With evil intent did he bring them out, to kill them in the mountains and to consume them from the face of the earth’? Turn from your burning anger and relent from this disaster against your people.”13 And the LORD relented from the disaster that he had spoken of bringing on his people.14 ¶ Then Moses turned and went down from the mountain, carrying the two tablets of the testimony in his hands, tablets written on both sides; on the front and on the back they were written.15 The tablets were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, engraved on the tablets.16 When Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said to Moses, “There is a noise of war in the camp.”17 But he said, “It is not the sound of victory, or the sound of defeat; but the sound of singing I hear.”18 ¶ And when Moses came near the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, Moses’ anger burned hot, and he threw the tablets out of his hands and broke them at the foot of the mountain.19 And he took the calf they had made and burned it with fire and ground it to powder and scattered it on the water and made the people drink it.20 ¶ And Moses said to Aaron, “What did this people do to you that you have brought a great sin upon them?”21 And Aaron said, “Do not let the anger of my lord burn hot. You know the people, that they are set on evil.22 For they said to me, ‘Make us gods who shall go before us. As for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’23 So I said to them, ‘Whoever has gold, let them take it off.’ And they gave it to me, and I threw it into the fire, and this calf came out.”24 ¶ And when Moses saw that the people were running wild (for Aaron had let them run wild, to the derision of their enemies),25 Moses stood in the gate of the camp and said, “Who is on the LORD’s side? Come to me.” And all the sons of Levi gathered around him.26 And he said to them, “Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, ‘Put your swords on your sides, go back and forth from gate to gate throughout the camp, and each of you kill his brother and his friend and his neighbor.’”27 And the sons of Levi did according to the word of Moses. And that day about three thousand men of the people fell.28 ¶ And Moses said, “Consecrate yourselves today to the LORD, even every man upon his son and upon his brother, that he may bestow a blessing upon you this day.”29 ¶ And the next day Moses said to the people, “You have sinned a great sin. And now I will go up to the LORD; perhaps I can make atonement for your sin.”30 So Moses returned to the LORD and said, “Alas, this people has sinned a great sin; they have made for themselves gods of gold.31 But now, if you will forgive their sin—but if not, please blot me out of your book that you have written.”32 ¶ But the LORD said to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against me, I will blot out of my book.33 Now therefore, go, lead the people to the place about which I have spoken to you. Behold, my angel shall go before you. Nevertheless, in the day when I visit, I will visit their sin upon them.”

Chapter 33 — Moses Intercedes for Israel
1 ¶ Then the LORD said to Moses, “Depart, and go up from here, you and athe people whom you have brought up out of the land of Egypt, to the land that I swore to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob, saying, ‘To your seed I will give it.’”2c“And I will send an angel before you. And dI will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite.3 “Go up to a eland flowing with milk and honey, for I will not go up in the midst of you because you are a fstiffnecked people, and gI might consume you on the way.”4 Now when the people heard these sad tidings, hthey mourned. And ino man put on his ornaments.5 For the LORD had said to Moses, “Say to the children of Israel, ‘You are a stiffnecked people. I will come up into the midst of you in a moment and consume you. Now therefore, put off your ornaments from you so that jI may know what to do with you.’”6 So the children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments by Mount Horeb.7 ¶ Then Moses took the tabernacle and pitched it outside the camp, a good distance from the camp. And he kcalled it the tabernacle of the assembly. And it came to pass that everyone who lsought the LORD went out to the tabernacle of the assembly that was outside the camp.8 Now it came to pass when Moses went out to the tabernacle that all the people rose up and every man stood at his tent door. And they gazed at Moses until he had gone into the tabernacle.9 Now it came to pass as Moses entered into the tabernacle, the pillar of cloud descended and stood at the door of the tabernacle. And the LORD ntalked with Moses.10 When all the people saw the pillar of cloud stand at the tabernacle door, all the people rose up and oworshiped, every man in his tent door.11 Now pthe LORD spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. When he returned again into the camp, his qservant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart out of the tabernacle.12 ¶ Then Moses said to the LORD, “See, rYou say to me, ‘Bring up this people.’ But You have not let me know whom You will send with me. Yet You have said, s‘I know you by name and you have also found grace in My sight.’”13 “Now therefore, I ask You, tif I have found grace in Your sight, ushow me now Your way so that I may know You, that I may find grace in Your sight and consider that this nation is vYour people.”14 And He said, w“My presence will go with you and I will give you xrest.”15 Then he said to Him, y“If Your presence does not go with me, do not carry us up from here.16 “For how will it be known that I and Your people have found grace in Your sight? Is it not by zYour going with us so that awe are separated, I and Your people, from all the people who are on the face of the earth?”17 ¶ Then the LORD said to Moses, b“I will do this thing also that you have spoken. For you have found grace in My sight and I know you by name.”18 And he said, “I beseech You. Show me cYour glory.”19 Then He said, “I will make all My dgoodness pass before you and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before you. And eI will be gracious to whom I will be fgracious and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.”20 But He said, “You cannot see My face, for gno man can see Me and live.”21 Then the LORD said, “Behold, there is a place by Me, and you will stand there on a rock.22 “And it will come to pass while My glory passes by, that I will put you in the hcleft of the rock and will icover you with My hand while I pass by.23 “And I will take away My hand and you will see My back. But My face will jnot be seen.”

Chapter 34 — New Tablets of Stone
1 ¶ Now the LORD said to Moses, a“Cut out two tablets of stone like the first, and bI will write on these tablets the words that were on the first tablets which you broke.”2 “And be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning to Mount Sinai and present yourself there to Me on the ctop of the mountain.3 “And no man will dcome up with you. Do not let any man be seen throughout all the mountain. Do not let the flocks or herds feed in front of the mountain.”4 ¶ So he cut two tablets of stone like the first. And Moses rose up early in the morning and went up to Mount Sinai as the LORD had commanded him. And he took in his hand the two tablets of stone.5 Then the LORD descended in the ecloud and stood with him there. And he fcalled on the name of the LORD.6 And the LORD passed by before him and proclaimed, “The LORD, The gLORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering and abundant in hgoodness and itruth,7j“keeping mercy for thousands, kforgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and who will lby no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and on the grandchildren, to the third and to the fourth generations.”8 And Moses made haste and mbowed his head toward the earth and worshiped.9 And he said, “If now I have found grace in your sight, O Lord, let My Lord, nI pray you, go among us, for this is a ostiffnecked people, and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for Your pinheritance.”10 ¶ Then He said, “Behold, I am going to qmake a covenant. Before all your people I will rdo marvels, such as have not been done in all the earth, nor in any nation. And all the people among whom you will see the work of the LORD. For it is an sawesome thing that I will do with you.”11t“Observe what I command you this day. Behold, uI am going to drive out before you the Amorite and the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite.”12v“Take heed to yourself, lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land into which you are going, lest it be for a snare in your midst.”13 “But you will wdestroy their altars, break their images and xcut down their groves.”14 “Do not worship any other god, for the LORD whose zname is Jealous, is a ajealous God.”15 “Be careful not to make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, for when they bprostitute themselves after their gods and sacrifice to their gods, cthey will call you to deat of their sacrifice.”16 “And when you take of etheir daughters for your sons, and their daughters prostitute themselves after their gods, they will make your sons fprostitute themselves after their gods.”17g“You will make for yourselves no molten gods.”18 ¶ “You will keep the feast of hunleavened bread. You will eat unleavened bread seven days, as I commanded you in the appointed time of the imonth of Abib. For in the month of Abib you came out of Egypt.”19j“The first offspring of every womb belongs to Me, including all the firstborn males of your livestock, whether from herd or flock.”20 “But the kfirstborn of a donkey you will redeem with a lamb. And if you do not redeem it, then you will break its neck. All the firstborn of your sons you will redeem. And no one will appear before Me lempty-handed.”21 ¶ m“Six days you will work. But on the seventh day you will rest. You will rest in plowing time and in harvest.”22 “And you will observe the feast of weeks with the firstfruits of wheat harvest, and the feast of ingathering at the end of the year.”23n“Three times in the year all your males will appear before the Lord GOD, the God of Israel.”24 “For I will ocast out the nations before you, and enlarge your borders. Neither will any man covet your land when you will go up to appear before the LORD your God three times in the year.”25 ¶ “You will not offer the blood of My sacrifice with leaven. pNeither will the sacrifice of the feast of the Passover be left until the morning.”26q“The first of the firstfruits of your land you will bring to the house of the LORD your God. You will not boil a kid in his mother’s milk.”27 ¶ Then the LORD said to Moses, “Write rthese words, for after the tenor of these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.”28sSo he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights. tHe did not eat bread or drink water. And He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.29 ¶ Now it came to pass when Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the utwo tablets of testimony in Moses’ hand, when he came down from the mountain, that Moses did not know that vthe skin of his face shone while he talked with Him.30 And when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone. And they were afraid to come near him.31 Then Moses called to them. And Aaron and all the rulers of the assembly returned to him. And Moses talked with them.32 Then afterward all the children of Israel came near. And he wgave them in commandment all that the LORD had spoken with him on Mount Sinai.33 And when Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a xveil on his face.34 But ywhen Moses went in before the LORD to speak with Him, he took the veil off until he came out. And he came out and spoke to the children of Israel what he was commanded.35 And the children of Israel saw the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses’ face shone. And Moses put the veil on his face again until he went in to speak with Him.

Chapter 35 — Sabbath Restrictions & Materials for the Tabernacle
1 ¶ Then Moses gathered all the assembly of the children of Israel together. And he said to them, a“These are the words that the LORD has commanded, that you should do them.”2b“Six days will work be done. But on the seventh day there will be to you a holy day, a Sabbath of rest to the LORD. Whoever does work on it will be put to cdeath.”3d“You will kindle no fire throughout your dwellings on the Sabbath day.”4 ¶ So Moses spoke to all the assembly of the children of Israel, saying, e“This is the thing that the LORD commanded, saying,”5 ‘Take from among you an offering to the LORD. fWhoever is of a willing heart, let him bring it as an offering of the LORD: ggold and silver and bronze.’6h‘and blue and purple and scarlet material and fine linen and igoat hair.’7 ‘and ram skins dyed red and badger skins and acacia wood.’8 ‘and oil for the light and jspices for anointing oil and for the sweet incense.’9 ‘and onyx stones and stones to be set for the ephod and for the breastplate.’10 ¶ k‘And every wise hearted person among you come and make all that the LORD has commanded.’11l‘the tabernacle, its tent and its covering, its hooks and its boards, its bars, its pillars and its sockets,’12m‘the ark and its poles, with the mercy seat and the veil of the covering,’13 ‘the ntable and its poles and all its vessels, and the oshowbread,’14 ‘the plampstand also for the light and its furniture and its lamps, with the oil for the light,’15 ‘the qincense altar and its poles, and the ranointing oil and the ssweet incense, and the curtain for the door at the entrance of the tabernacle,’16t‘the altar of burnt offering, with its brazen grate, its poles and all its vessels, the laver and its foot,’17u‘the curtains of the court, its pillars and their sockets, and the curtain for the door of the court,’18 ‘the pins of the tabernacle and the pins of the court, and their cords,’19v‘the garments for service to do service in the holy place, the holy garments for Aaron the priest and the garments of his sons to minister in the priest’s office.’”20 ¶ Then all the assembly of the children of Israel departed from the presence of Moses.21 And everyone came wwhose heart was stirred up, and everyone whose spirit made him willing. They xbrought the LORD’S offering to the work of the tabernacle of the assembly, and for all its service and for the holy garments.22 Then they came, both men and women, as many as had a willing heart. They brought bracelets and yearrings and rings and tablets, all zjewels of gold. And so did every man who offered an offering of gold to the LORD.23 So every man with whom was found blue and purple and scarlet material and fine linen, and goat hair and red skins of rams and badger skins, brought them.24aEveryone who offered an offering of silver and bronze, brought the Lord’s offering. And every man with whom was found acacia wood for any work of the service, brought it.25 And all the women who were bskillful spun with their hands and brought what they had spun, both of blue and of purple and of scarlet material and of fine linen.26 And all the women whose heart stirred them up in wisdom spun goat hair.27cAnd the rulers brought onyx stones and stones to be set for the ephod and for the breastplate,28 and dspice and oil for the light and for the anointing oil and for the fragrant incense.29 The children of Israel brought a ewilling offering to the LORD, every man and woman whose heart made them willing to bring for all manner of work that the LORD had commanded to be made by the hand of Moses.30 ¶ Then Moses said to the children of Israel, “See, fthe LORD has called by name Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah.”31 “And He has filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding and in knowledge and in all manner of workmanship,”32 “to design artistic works, to work in gold and in silver and in bronze,”33 “and in the cutting of stones, to set them, and in carving of wood, to make any manner of inventive work.”34 “Now He has put in his heart so that he may teach, both he and gAholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan.”35 “He has hfilled them with wisdom of heart to work all manner of work of the engraver, and of the skillful workman, and of the embroiderer, in blue and in purple, in scarlet material, and in fine linen, and of the weaver, even of those who do any work, and of those who devise skillful work.”

Chapter 36 — Construction of the Tabernacle
1 ¶ “Then Bezaleel and Aholiab, and every askillful person in whom the LORD put wisdom and understanding to know how to work all manner of work for the service of the bsanctuary, will perform according to all that the LORD has commanded.”2 ¶ Then Moses called Bezaleel and Aholiab, and every skillful person in whose heart the LORD had put wisdom, even everyone cwhose heart stirred him up to come to do the work.3 And they received from Moses all the doffering that the children of Israel ehad brought for the work of the construction of the sanctuary. And they continued to bring free offerings to him every morning.4 And all the wise men who were performing all the work of the sanctuary came, every man from his work that he made.5 And they spoke to Moses, saying, f“The people bring more than enough for the construction work that the LORD commanded us to make.”6 Then Moses gave commandment and they caused it to be proclaimed throughout the camp, saying, “Let neither man nor woman make anymore work for the offering of the sanctuary.” So the people were restrained from bringing more.7 For the material they had was gmore than sufficient for all the work to make it.8 ¶ hAnd every skillful man among them who performed the work of the tabernacle made ten curtains of fine twined linen and blue and purple and scarlet material, with cherubim of skillful craftsmen.9 The length of one curtain was twenty-eight cubits, and the width of one curtain four cubits. The curtains were all of one size.10 And he joined the five curtains to one another. And the other five curtains he also joined to one another.11 Then he made loops of blue on the edge of one curtain from the selvedge in the coupling. He made the same in the outer edge of the other curtain of the second set.12iHe made fifty loops in one curtain, and he made fifty loops in the edge of the curtain that was in the coupling of the second. The loops held one curtain to another.13 And he made fifty clasps of gold and coupled the curtains to one another with the clasps. So it became one tabernacle.14 ¶ jAnd he made curtains of goat hair for the tent over the tabernacle. He made eleven curtains.15 The length of one curtain was thirty cubits, and four cubits was the width of one curtain. The eleven curtains were of one size.16 And he joined five curtains by themselves and six curtains by themselves.17 And he made fifty loops on the uttermost edge of the curtain in the coupling, and he made fifty loops on the edge of the curtain that joined the second.18 Then he made fifty clasps of bronze to join the tent together so that it might be one.19kAnd he made a covering for the tent of ram skins dyed red, and a covering of badgers’ skins above that.20 ¶ Then lhe made boards for the tabernacle of acacia wood, standing upright.21 The length of a board was ten cubits and the width of each board was one and a half cubits.22 One board had two mtenons, equally distant from one another. Thus he did for all the boards of the tabernacle.23 And he made boards for the tabernacle: twenty boards for the south side southward;24 and he made forty sockets of silver under the twenty boards; two sockets under one board for its two tenons and two sockets under another board for its two tenons.25 And for the other side of the tabernacle, which is toward the north corner, he made twenty boards,26 and their forty sockets of silver; two sockets under one board and two sockets under another board.27 Then for the sides of the tabernacle westward, he made six boards.28 And he made two boards for the corners of the tabernacle in the two sides.29 And they were joined beneath and joined together at the head of it to one ring. Thus he did to both of them in both the corners.30 And there were eight boards. And their sockets were sixteen sockets of silver, under every board two sockets.31 ¶ Then he made nbars of acacia wood, five for the boards of the one side of the tabernacle,32 and five bars for the boards of the other side of the tabernacle, and five bars for the boards of the tabernacle for the westward sides.33 And he made the middle bar to pass through the boards from one end to the other.34 And he overlaid the boards with gold, and made their rings of gold to be places for the bars, and overlaid the bars with gold.35 ¶ Then he made a oveil of blue and purple and scarlet material, and fine twined linen. He made it with cherubim of a skillful craftsman.36 And he made for it four pillars of acacia wood and overlaid them with gold. Their hooks were of gold, and he cast for them four sockets of silver.37 And he made a pcurtain for the tabernacle door of blue and purple and scarlet material, and fine twined linen of needlework.38 And he made the five pillars of it with their hooks. And he overlaid their tops and their bands with gold. But their five sockets were of bronze.

Chapter 37 — The Ark, Table, Lampstand, and Altar of Incense
1 ¶ So aBezaleel made the bark of acacia wood. Its length was two and a half cubits and its width was one and a half cubits. And its height was one and a half cubits.2 And he overlaid it with pure gold inside and outside. And he made a molding of gold all around it.3 Then he cast for it four rings of gold to be set by its four corners, even two rings on the one side of it and two rings on the other side of it.4 And he made poles of acacia wood and overlaid them with gold.5 And he put the poles into the rings by the sides of the ark in order to carry the ark.6 And he made the cmercy seat of pure gold, two and a half cubits long and one and a half cubits wide.7 And on the two ends of the mercy seat he made two cherubim that were beaten out of one piece of gold.8 There was one cherub on the end on this side and another cherub on the other end on that side. He made the cherubim at the two ends of one piece with the mercy seat.9 And the cherubim spread out their wings on high and covered with their wings over the dmercy seat, with their faces toward one another. The faces of the cherubim were toward the mercy seat.10 ¶ And he made the etable of acacia wood, two cubits long and a cubit wide and one and a half cubits high.11 And he overlaid it with pure gold, and made a crown of gold for it all around it.12 He also made for it a border of a handwidth all around. And he made a crown of gold for its border all around.13 And he cast for it four rings of gold and put the rings on the four corners that were in its four feet.14 The rings were close by the border as holders for the poles to carry the table.15 And he made the poles of acacia wood and overlaid them with gold in order to carry the table.16 And he made from pure gold the vessels that were on the table, its fdishes and its spoons and its pitchers, for the pouring out of drink offerings.17 ¶ And he made the lampstand of pure gold. He made the glampstand of hammered work, its base and its branch, its cups, its knobs and its flowers, were of the same piece.18 There were six branches going out of the sides of it. Three branches of the lampstand went out of the one side of it and three branches of the lampstand went out of the other side of it.19 Three cups were made after the fashion of almonds in one branch, a knob and a flower. And three cups were made like almonds on another branch, a knob and a flower. So the six branches were extending from the lampstand.20 And in the lampstand were four cups made like almonds, its knobs and its flowers;21 and a knob under two branches of the same, and a knob under two branches of the same, and a knob under two branches of the same, according to the six branches extending out from it.22 Their knobs and their branches were of the same. All of it was of one hammered piece of pure gold.23 And he made its seven lamps and its hsnuffers and its snuffdishes of pure gold.24 He made it from a talent of pure gold, and all its vessels.25 ¶ iAnd he made the incense altar of acacia wood. The length of it was a cubit and the width of it a cubit. It was square. It was two cubits high. Its horns were of the same.26 And he overlaid it with pure gold, both the top of it and its sides all around, and its horns. He also made for it a crown of gold all around.27 And he made two rings of gold for it under its crown, by the two corners of it, on its two sides, to be places for the poles to carry it.28 And he made the jpoles of acacia wood and overlaid them with gold.29 ¶ And he made the kholy anointing oil and the pure incense of fragrant spices according to the work of a perfumer.

Chapter 38 — The Altar of Burnt Offerings, Laver, and Courtyard
1 ¶ Then he made the aaltar of burnt offering of acacia wood. Five cubits was its length and five cubits was its breadth. It was square. And it was three cubits high.2 And he made its horns on its four corners. Its horns were of the same piece. And he overlaid it with bronze.3 And he made all the vessels of the altar, the pots and the shovels and the basins and the meat hooks and the firepans. He made all its vessels of bronze.4 And he made for the altar a brazen grate of network under its rim, midway from the bottom.5 And he cast four rings for the four ends of the grate of bronze to be holders for the poles.6 And he made the poles of acacia wood and overlaid them with bronze.7 And he put the poles into the rings on the sides of the altar in order to carry it. He made the altar hollow with boards.8 ¶ And he made the blaver of bronze and its foot of bronze, from the mirrors of the serving women who assembled at the door of the tabernacle of the assembly.9 ¶ Then he made the ccourt. On the south side southward the curtains of the court were of fine twined linen, one hundred cubits.10 Their twenty pillars and their twenty sockets were made of bronze. The hooks of the pillars and their fillets were of silver.11 And on the north side the curtains were one hundred cubits. Their twenty pillars and their twenty sockets were of bronze. The hooks of the pillars and their fillets were of silver.12 And for the west side were curtains of fifty cubits, with their ten pillars and their ten sockets. The hooks of the pillars and their fillets were of silver.13 And for the east side eastward fifty cubits.14 The curtains of the one side of the gate were fifteen cubits, with their three pillars and their three sockets.15 And for the other side of the court gate, on this hand and that hand, were curtains of fifteen cubits with their three pillars and their three sockets.16 All the curtains of the court all around were of fine twined linen.17 And the sockets for the pillars were of bronze. The hooks of the pillars and their fillets were of silver and the overlaying of their tops of silver. And all the pillars of the court had bands of silver.18 And the curtain for the gate of the court was needlework of blue and purple and scarlet material and fine twined linen. And its length was twenty cubits and the height was five cubits, corresponding to the curtains of the court.19 And their four pillars and their four sockets were of bronze. Their hooks were of silver and the overlaying of their tops and their fillets were of silver.20 And all the dpegs of the tabernacle and of the court all around were of bronze.21 ¶ This is the inventory of the etabernacle, even of the tabernacle of testimony, as it was counted according to the commandment of Moses, for the service of the Levites by the fhand of gIthamar, son to Aaron the priest.22 And hBezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, made all that the LORD commanded Moses.23 And with him was iAholiab, son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, an engraver and a skillful craftsman, and an embroiderer in blue and in purple and in scarlet material and fine linen.24 ¶ All the gold that was used for the work in all the work of the holy place, even the gold of the joffering, was twenty-nine talents and 730 shekels, according to the kshekel of the sanctuary.25 And the silver of those who were lnumbered of the assembly was one hundred talents and 1,775 shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary;26 ma bekah for every man, that is, half a shekel according to the shekel of the sanctuary for everyone who went to be numbered, from twenty years old and upward, for n603,550 men.27 And from the hundred talents of silver were cast the sockets of the sanctuary and the osockets of the veil; one hundred sockets for the hundred talents, a talent for a socket.28 And of the 1,775 shekels he made hooks for the pillars and overlaid their tops and pmade bands for them.29 ¶ And the bronze of the offering was seventy talents and 2,400 shekels.30 And with it he made the sockets to the door of the tabernacle of the assembly and the brazen altar and the brazen grate for it, and all the vessels of the altar,31 and the sockets of the court all around, and the sockets of the court gate, and all the pegs of the tabernacle, and all the pegs of the court all around.

Chapter 39 — Garments for the Priests
1 ¶ And of the ablue and purple and scarlet material, they made bgarments of service to do service in the holy place. And they made the holy garments for Aaron cas the LORD commanded Moses.2 ¶ dAnd he made the eephod of gold, blue and purple material and scarlet and fine twined linen.3 And they hammered the gold into thin plates and cut it into wires in order to work it into the blue and into the purple and into the scarlet material and into the fine linen of a skillful craftsman.4 They made shoulder straps for it to couple it together. It was coupled together at its two edges.5 And the skillfully woven band that was on it was like its workmanship, of the same material: of gold and of blue and purple and scarlet material, and fine twined linen, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.6 ¶ fAnd they made onyx stones enclosed in settings of gold, graven as signets are graven, with the names of the children of Israel.7 And he put them on the shoulders of the ephod so that they should be stones for a gmemorial to the children of Israel, as the LORD commanded Moses.8 ¶ hAnd he made the breastplate of a skillful craftsman, like the workmanship of the ephod: of gold, blue and purple and scarlet material and fine twined linen.9 It was square. They made the breastplate double, a span long and a span wide when folded double.10iThen they set in it four rows of stones. The first row was a sardius, a topaz and an emerald. This was the first row.11 And the second row was made of an emerald, a sapphire and a diamond.12 And the third row was made of a ligure, an agate and an amethyst.13 And the fourth row was made of a beryl, an onyx and a jasper. They were enclosed in settings of gold in their mountings.14 And the jstones were according to the names of the children of Israel, twelve, according to their names, like the engravings of a signet, each one with its name according to the twelve tribes.15 Then they made chains on the breastplate at the ends, of braided work of pure gold.16 Then they made two settings of gold and two gold rings. And they put the two rings in the two ends of the breastplate.17 Then they put the two braided chains of gold in the two rings on the ends of the breastplate.18 And the two ends of the two braided chains they fastened in the two settings. And they put them on the shoulder straps of the ephod in front of it.19 Then they made two rings of gold and put them on the two ends of the breastplate, on the border of it, that was on the inward side of the ephod.20 Then they made two other golden rings and put them on the two sides of the ephod, underneath, toward the front of it, right at the seam above the skillfully woven band of the ephod.21 Then they bound the breastplate by its rings to the rings of the ephod with a lace of blue so that it might be above the skillfully woven band of the ephod, and that the breastplate might not be loosed from the ephod, as the LORD commanded Moses.22 ¶ kThen he made the lrobe of the ephod of woven work, all of blue.23 And there was a hole in the center of the robe, as the hole of a coat of mail, with a band all around the hole so that it would not tear.24 Then they made on the hems of the robe pomegranates of blue and purple and scarlet material and twined linen.25 Then they made mbells of pure gold and put the bells between the pomegranates on the hem of the robe, all around between the pomegranates;26 a bell and a pomegranate, a bell and a pomegranate, all around the hem of the robe to serve in, as the LORD commanded Moses.27nThen they made coats of fine linen of woven work for Aaron and for his sons,28 and oa turban of fine linen and decorated caps of fine linen, and linen ptrousers of fine twined linen,29 and a qsash of fine twined linen and blue and purple and scarlet material of needlework, as the LORD commanded Moses.30 ¶ rThen they made the plate of the holy crown of pure gold and wrote on it a writing, like the engravings of a signet, “Holy to the LORD.”31 And they tied to it a lace of blue in order to fasten it on the turban above, as the LORD commanded Moses.32 ¶ Thus was tfinished all the work of the tabernacle of the tent of the assembly. And the children of Israel did uaccording to all that the LORD commanded Moses; so they did.33 And they brought the tabernacle to Moses, the tent and all its furniture, its clasps, its boards, its bars, its pillars and its sockets,34 and the covering of rams’ skins dyed red, and the covering of badger skins, and the veil of the covering,35 the ark of the testimony and its poles, and the mercy seat,36 the table and all its vessels, and the vshowbread,37 the pure lampstand with its lamps, even with the lamps to be set in order, and all its vessels, and the oil for light,38 the golden altar, and the anointing oil, and the fragrant incense, and the curtains for the tabernacle door,39 the brazen altar, and its grate of bronze, its poles, and all its vessels, the laver and its stand,40 the curtains of the court, its pillars and its sockets, and the curtains for the court gate, its cords and its pegs, and all the vessels of the service of the tabernacle, for the tent of the assembly,41 the garments of service to do service in the holy place, and the holy garments for Aaron the priest, and his sons’ garments, to minister in the priest’s office.42 ¶ According to all that the LORD had commanded Moses, so the children of Israel made all the work.43 And Moses examined all the work, and behold, they had done it as the LORD had commanded, even so they did it. And Moses xblessed them.

Chapter 40 — Setting up of the Tabernacle
1 ¶ Then the LORD aspoke to Moses, saying,2 “On the first day of the bfirst month you will set up the ctabernacle of the tent of the assembly.3d“And you will put in it the ark of the testimony and cover the ark with the veil.4e“Then you will bring in the table and fset in order the things that are to be set in order on it. gAnd you will bring in the lampstand and light its lamps.5h“Then you will set the altar of gold for the incense before the ark of the testimony and put on the curtain of the door to the tabernacle.6 “Then you will set the ialtar of the burnt offering before the door of the tabernacle of the tent of the assembly.7 “Then jyou will set the laver between the tent of the assembly and the altar, and put water in it.8 “Then you will set up the court all around and hang up the curtain at the court gate.9 “Then you will take the kanointing oil and anoint the tabernacle and all that is in it. And you will consecrate it and all its vessels. And it will be holy.10 “Then you will lanoint the altar of the burnt offering and all its vessels, and sanctify the altar. And it will be an maltar most holy.11 “Then you will anoint the laver and its stand and sanctify it.12n“Then you will bring Aaron and his sons to the door of the tabernacle of the assembly and wash them with water.13 “And you will put on Aaron the oholy garments and panoint him and sanctify him so that he may minister to Me in the priest’s office.14 “Then you will bring his sons and clothe them with coats.15 “And you will anoint them as you anointed their father so that they may minister to Me in the priest’s office. For their anointing will surely be an qeverlasting priesthood throughout their generations.”16 Thus did Moses, according to all that the LORD commanded him, so he did.17 ¶ Now it came to pass in the first month in the second year, on the first day of the month, that the rtabernacle was erected.18 So Moses erected the tabernacle and fastened its sockets and set up its boards and put in its bars and erected its pillars.19 Then he spread the tent over the tabernacle and put the covering of the tent on top of it, as the LORD commanded Moses.20 Then he took the stestimony and put it in the ark and attached the poles to the ark. And he put the mercy seat on top of the ark.21 Then he brought the ark into the tabernacle and tset up the veil of the covering and covered the ark of the testimony, as the LORD commanded Moses.22uThen he put the table in the tent of the assembly on the side of the tabernacle northward, outside the veil.23vThen he set the bread in order on it before the LORD, as the LORD had commanded Moses.24wThen he put the lampstand in the tent of the assembly, opposite the table, on the south side of the tabernacle.25 Then xhe lit the lamps before the LORD, as the LORD commanded Moses.26yThen he put the golden altar in the tent of the assembly before the veil.27 And zhe burned fragrant incense on it, as the LORD commanded Moses.28aThen he set up the curtain at the door of the tabernacle.29bAnd he put the altar of burnt offering by the door of the tabernacle of the tent of the assembly and coffered on it the burnt offering and the meat offering, as the LORD commanded Moses.30dThen he set the laver between the tent of the assembly and the altar, and put water there for washing.31 And Moses and Aaron and his sons ewashed their hands and their feet.32 When they went into the tent of the assembly and when they came near to the altar, they washed, fas the LORD commanded Moses.33gThen he erected the court all around the tabernacle and the altar. And he set up the curtains of the court gate. So Moses hfinished the work.34 ¶ iThen a jcloud covered the tent of the assembly and the kglory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.35 And Moses lwas not able to enter into the tent of the assembly because the cloud settled on it, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.36mNow when the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the children of Israel set out on all their journeys.37 But nif the cloud was not taken up, then they did not journey until the day that it was taken up.38 For othe cloud of the LORD was on the tabernacle by day and fire was on it by night in the sight of all the house of Israel, throughout all their journeys.
