Leviticus

~ Introduction ~

WRITER

This oracle of God was given to Israel through the inspired hand of Moses. Twenty of the 27 chapters of this book begin with the phrase, “The Lord spoke to Moses, saying ...” (See 1:1–3:17; 4:1–5:19). In other cases the Lord spoke to Moses, Aaron, as well as Aaron’s his sons (11:1; 13:1; 14:33; 15:1). It is assumed that during the latter part of Israel’s wandering in the wilderness that Moses inscribed the words of this book for the instruction of Israel throughout their eventual dwelling in the land of promise. The actual giving of the laws of the book was between the erection of the tabernacle in the first month of the second year after Israel’s departure from Egypt (Ex 40:17), and the first day of the second month of that same year (Nm 1:1). We assume that the book, however, was written after Israel left Sinai, but before their arrival at the east border of the promised land. The date of the actual writing of the book by Moses, therefore, would probably be somewhere between 1,440 and 1,400 B.C. There is no way we can be certain with these dates. We only assume that Moses was inspired to write them by the Holy Spirit while the Israelites were wandering in the wilderness of Sinai. We are only certain that he wrote the books.

Book

The translators of the Septuagint gave the name “Leviticus” to this book. It is an appropriate name since the book contains the laws, regulations and ordinances that are directed specifically to the tribe of Levi in order that they perform their priestly duties on behalf of Israel. The book also discusses how the nation and individuals are to approach God in order to remain in fellowship with Him. Instructions are given on how to maintain holiness in order to approach God who is holy. The teaching of this book lays the foundation for the atoning sacrifice of Jesus. It does this by explaining the horrible nature of sin, as well as the power of sacrificial blood that brings man again into fellowship with God. The key message of Leviticus is that God provides the means by which humanity can come into His presence. This means is through the atonement of sacrificial blood. Through sacrificial blood people are made holy in order to approach God. The word “holiness” is mentioned 88 times and the word “atonement” 45 times. The key verses would be 17:11, “For it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul,” and 19:2, “You will be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy.” Since the book of Hebrews serves as a commentary of Leviticus, it is not difficult to understand that the root of holiness in the Christian life is initially explained by God in Leviticus. It is in Leviticus that Christians understand that through holiness God wants His people to remain separate from sin. When they sin, however, He seeks for atoning blood that would restore fellowship between Himself and the sinner. And thus the foundation is laid in the book of Leviticus for the necessity of the gospel. Holiness, or righteousness, can never be accomplished on the foundation of living perfectly according to law, for no one can keep all the law perfectly. For this reason, it was necessary that the righteousness of God be revealed through the sacrifice of the cross, which would come over 1,400 years later. Though the Israelites did not understand this message of the gospel, it would eventually be reveal to them with the coming of the Messiah, and then the coming of the Holy Spirit on the apostles in Acts 2:1- 4. At this time, they were only given hope that something was coming.

PRIESTHOOD

Though the nation of Israel was a nation of priests to the world (Ex 19:6), God chose the tribe of Levi to function specifically as priests to the nation of Israel. From Aaron’s sons, the high priests were chosen. Only the high priest could enter into the holy place of the tabernacle on the day of atonement in order to offer an atoning sacrifice for the nation. The practice of entering into the holy place of the tabernacle would many centuries later be carried out by the crucified Son of God who would enter the “holy place” of heaven on behalf of all those who became priests through their obedience to the gospel that would be revealed through the incarnate Son of God. The Levites were given 48 cities in the promise land, but no land possession (Ja 21:1-42). They were thus to be supported by the tithes of the nation and the offerings that were brought in sacrifice by the people. The priests’ service in the religious ceremonies was from the age of thirty to fifty. They did not serve in any military capacity. They were God’s spiritual leadership for the nation, and thus they functioned to continually focus the minds of the people on God and His law. Not only were they to focus the minds of the Israelites on God, they were to also do the same to all nations.

Chapter 1 — The Burnt Offering

1 And the LORD a called to Moses and spoke to him b out of the tabernacle of the assembly, saying, 2“Speak to the children of Israel and say to them, c ‘If any man of you brings an offering to the LORD, you will bring your offering of the livestock, even of the herd and of the flock. 3‘If his offering is a burnt sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male d without blemish. He will offer it of his own voluntary will at the door of the tabernacle of the assembly before the LORD. 4e ‘And he will lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering, and it will be f accepted for him g to make atonement for him. 5Then he will kill the h bull before the LORD. i And the priests, Aaron’s sons, will bring the blood and j sprinkle the blood all around on the altar that is by the door of the tabernacle of the assembly. 6And he will k skin the burnt offering and cut it into pieces. 7And the sons of Aaron the priest will put l fire on the altar and m lay the wood in order on the fire. 8Then the priests, Aaron’s sons, will lay the parts, the head and the fat, in order on the wood that is on the fire that is on the altar. 9But its entrails and its legs he will wash in water. And the priest will burn all on the altar, to be a burnt sacrifice, an o fragrant aroma to the LORD. 10And if his offering for a burnt sacrifice is of the flocks, namely, of the sheep or of the goats, he will offer a male p without blemish. 11And he will kill it on the side of the altar northward before the LORD. And the priests, Aaron’s sons, will sprinkle its blood all around on the altar. 12Then he will cut it into pieces, with its head and its fat. And the priest will lay them in order on the wood that is on the fire that is on the altar. 13But he will wash the entrails and the legs with water. And the priest will bring it all and burn it on the altar. It is a burnt sacrifice, an q offering made by fire of a fragrant aroma to the LORD. 14And if the burnt sacrifice for his offering to the LORD is of birds, then he will bring his offering of r turtledoves or of young pigeons. 15And the priest will bring it to the altar and wring off its head and burn it on the altar. And its blood will be drained out at the side of the altar. 16Then he will pluck away its crop with its feathers and cast it s beside the altar on the east side, by the place of the ashes. 17Then he will tear it by its wings, but t will not divide it apart. And the priest will burn it on the altar, on the wood that is on the fire. u It is a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire of a fragrant aroma to the LORD.

Chapter 2 — The Grain Offering

1a ‘Now when anyone offers a grain offering to the LORD, his offering will be of fine flour. And he will pour oil on it and put b frankincense on it. 2Then he will bring it to Aaron’s sons the priests. And he will take out of it his handful of the flour and of the oil, with all the frankincense. And the priest will offer it up in smoke as its c memorial portion on the altar, an offering by fire of a fragrant aroma to the LORD. 3d ‘And the remainder of the grain offering will be Aaron’s and his e sons. f It is a most holy thing of the offerings to the LORD made by fire. 4‘And if you bring a gift of a grain offering baked in the oven, it will be unleavened cakes of fine flour mingled with oil, or unleavened wafers g anointed with oil. 5And if your gift is a grain offering baked in a pan, it will be of fine flour unleavened, mingled with oil. 6You will divide it in pieces and pour oil on it. It is a grain offering. 7¶ ‘And if your gift is a grain offering baked in the h frying pan, it will be made of fine flour with oil. 8And you will bring the grain offering that is made of these things to the LORD. And when it is presented to the priest, he will bring it to the altar. 9Then the priest will take from the grain offering a i memorial portion and will burn it on the altar. It is an j offering made by fire of a fragrant aroma to the LORD. 10k What is left of the grain offering will be Aaron’s and his sons. It is a thing most holy of the offerings of the LORD made by fire. 11No grain offering that you will bring to the LORD will be made with l leaven. For you will burn no leaven, nor any honey in any offering of the LORD made by fire. 12m ‘As for the gift of the firstfruits, you will offer them to the LORD. But they will not be burned on the altar for a fragrant aroma. 13And you will n season with salt every gift of your grain offering. You will not allow the o salt of the covenant of your God to be lacking from your grain offering. You will offer salt p with all your offerings. 14¶ ‘And if you offer a grain offering of your q firstfruits to the LORD, you will offer for the grain offering of your firstfruits green ears of corn dried by the fire, even corn beaten out of r full ears. 15And you s will put oil on it, and lay frankincense on it. It is a grain offering. 16Then the priest will burn the t memorial of it, part of the beaten corn of it, and part of the oil of it, with all the frankincense of it. It is an offering made by fire to the LORD.

And Aaron’s sons the priests will d sprinkle the blood on the altar all around. 3And he will offer of the sacrifice of the peace offering an offering made by fire to the LORD, the fat that covers the entrails, and all the e fat that is on the entrails, 4and the two kidneys, and the fat that is on them, that is by the loins. And the lobe above the liver, he will remove with the kidneys. 5And Aaron’s sons f will burn it on the altar upon the g burnt sacrifice, which is on the wood that is on the fire. It is an h offering made by fire of a i fragrant aroma to the LORD. 6¶ ‘And if his offering for a sacrifice of peace offering to the LORD is of the flock, male or female, j he will offer it without blemish. 7If he offers a k lamb for his offering, then he will l offer it m before the LORD. 8And he will lay his hand on the head of his offering and kill it before the tabernacle of the assembly. Chapter 4 — The Sin Offering

1 ¶ Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2“Speak to the children of Israel, saying, a ‘If a soul unintentionally sins against any of the commandments of the LORD in anything that should not be done, and does any of them, 3b ‘if the priest who is anointed sins, bringing guilt on the people, then let him bring to the LORD for a c sin offering for his sin that he has sinned, a d young bull without blemish. 4‘And he will bring the bull e to the door of the tabernacle of the assembly before the LORD. And he will lay his hand on the bull’s head and kill the bull before the LORD. 5‘And the priest who is anointed f will take of the bull’s blood and bring it to the tabernacle of the assembly. 6‘And the priest will dip his finger in the blood and sprinkle from the blood seven times before the LORD, before the g veil of the sanctuary. 7‘And the priest will h put some of the blood on the horns of the altar of fragrant incense before the LORD that is in the tabernacle of the assembly. And he will pour i all the blood of the bull at the bottom of the altar of the burnt offering that is at the door of the tabernacle of the assembly. 8‘And he will take off from it all the fat of the bull for the sin offering, the fat that covers the entrails and all the fat that is on the entrails, 9and the two kidneys, and the fat that is on them, that is by the flanks, and the lobe above the liver, that he will remove with the kidneys. 10j ‘(just as it is removed from the bull of the sacrifice of peace offerings), and the priest will burn them on the altar of the burnt offering. 11k ‘And the skin of the bull and all its meat, with its head, and with its legs and its entrails and its offal, 12‘even the whole bull he will carry forth outside the camp to a clean place l where the ashes are poured out, and burn it on the wood with fire. It will be burned where the ashes are poured out. 13¶ ‘And if the n whole assembly of Israel sin through ignorance, and o the thing is hidden from the eyes of the assembly, and they have committed things against any of the commandments of the LORD about things that should not be done, and are guilty; 14‘when the sin that they have sinned is known, then the assembly will offer a young bull for the sin and bring it before the tabernacle of the assembly. 15‘And the elders of the assembly p will lay their hands on the head of the bull before the LORD. And the bull will be killed before the LORD. 16q ‘And the priest who is anointed will bring some of the bull’s blood to the tabernacle of the assembly. 17‘Then the priest will dip his finger in some of the blood and sprinkle it seven times before the LORD, even before the veil. 18‘Then he will put some of the blood on the horns of the altar that is before the LORD, that is in the tabernacle of the assembly. And he will pour out all the blood at the bottom of the altar of the burnt offering, that is at the door of the tabernacle of the assembly. 19‘Then he will remove all its fat from it and burn it on the altar. 20‘And he will do r with the bull as he did with the bull for a sin offering, so he will do with it. And s the priest will make atonement for them and they will be forgiven. 21‘Then he will carry forth the bull outside the camp and burn it as he burnt the first bull. It is a sin offering for the assembly. 22¶ ‘When a ruler has sinned and t does anything through ignorance against any of the commandments of the LORD his God about things that should not be done, and is guilty, 23‘or u if his sin, wherein he has sinned, comes to his knowledge, he will bring his offering, a kid of the goats, a male without blemish. 24v ‘He will lay his hand on the head of the goat and kill it in the place where they killed the burnt offering before the LORD. It is a sin offering. 25w ‘And the priest will take of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering. And he will pour out its blood at the bottom of the altar of burnt offering. 26‘And he will burn all its x fat on the altar, as the fat of the sacrifice of peace offerings. And y the priest will make atonement for him concerning his sin, and he will be forgiven. 27¶ z ‘And if anyone of the common people sin through ignorance, in doing any of the things that the LORD has commanded not to be done, and he is guilty, 28‘or a if his sin that he has sinned comes to his knowledge, then he will bring his offering, a kid of the goats, a female without blemish, for his sin that he has sinned. 29b ‘And he will lay his hand on the head of the sin offering and slay the sin offering in the place of the burnt offering. 30‘And the priest will take of its blood with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering. And he will pour out all its blood at the bottom of the altar. 31c ‘And he will take away all its d fat, as the fat is taken away from the sacrifice of peace offerings. And the priest will burn it on the altar for a e fragrant aroma to the LORD. And f the priest will make atonement for him, and it will be forgiven him. 32¶ ‘And if he brings a lamb for a sin offering, g he will bring a female without blemish. 33‘Then he will h lay his hand on the head of the sin offering and slay it for a sin offering in the place where they killed the burnt offering. 34‘And the priest will take of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering, and will pour out all its blood at the bottom of the altar. 35‘And he will take away all its fat, as the fat of the lamb is taken away from the sacrifice of the peace offerings. And the priest will burn them on the altar i according to the offerings made by fire to the LORD. And j the priest will make atonement for his sin that he has committed, and it will be forgiven him.

Chapter 5 — The Guilt Offering

1 ¶ ‘Now if a soul sins because he a hears a public charge to testify regarding something he has seen or learned, b he will be held responsible. 2‘Or c if a soul touches any unclean thing… and if it is hidden from him, he also will be unclean and d guilty. 3‘Or if he touches the e uncleanness of a man… then he will be guilty. 4‘Or if a soul swears, pronouncing with his lips f to do evil or g to do good… then he will be guilty in one of these. 5‘So it will be when he becomes guilty in one of these, that he will h confess that in what he has sinned. 6‘And he will bring his trespass offering to the LORD for his sin that he has sinned, a female from the flock, a lamb or a kid of the goats, for a sin offering. And the priest will make atonement for him concerning his sin. 7¶ i ‘And if he is not able to bring a lamb, then he will bring to the LORD for his trespass that he has committed, j two turtledoves or two young pigeons, one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering. 8‘And he will bring them to the priest who will offer that which is for the sin offering first. And he will k wring off its head from its neck, but will not divide it apart. 9‘And he will sprinkle of the blood of the sin offering on the side of the altar. And the l rest of the blood will be wrung out at the bottom of the altar. It is a sin offering. 10‘Then he will offer the second for a burnt offering according to the ordinance. And n the priest will make atonement for him for his sin that he has sinned, and it will be forgiven him. 11¶ ‘But if he is o not able to bring two turtledoves or two young pigeons, then he who sinned will bring for his offering one-tenth of an ephah of fine flour for a sin offering. p He will put no oil on it, nor will he put any frankincense on it, for it is a sin offering. 12‘Then he will bring it to the priest and the priest will take his handful of it, even q a memorial of it, and burn it on the altar, r according to the offerings made by fire to the LORD. It is a sin offering. 13s ‘Then the priest will make atonement for him for his sin that he has sinned in one of these, and it will be forgiven him. t And the remainder will be the priest’s as a grain offering. 14¶ Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 15u “If a soul commits a trespass and sins unintentionally in the holy things of the LORD, then v he will bring for his trespass to the LORD a ram without blemish out of the flocks, according to your valuation in silver by shekels, after the w shekel of the sanctuary, for a trespass offering. 16“And he will make restitution for the harm that he has done in the holy thing, and will x add to it one-fifth of it and give it to the priest. And y the priest will make atonement for him with the ram of the trespass offering. And it will be forgiven him. 17¶ “And if a soul sins and commits any of these things that are forbidden to be done by the commandments of the LORD, z though he was unaware, yet he is a guilty and will bear his iniquity. 18b “And he will bring to the priest a ram without blemish out of the flock according to your valuation, for a trespass offering. And the priest will make atonement for him concerning his ignorance wherein he erred and did not know it. And it will be forgiven him. 19c “It is a trespass offering. He has certainly trespassed against the LORD.”

Chapter 6 — Laws of Offerings

1 ¶ Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2“If a soul sins and a commits a trespass against the LORD, and b lies to his neighbor in c what was delivered to him to keep, or in fellowship, or in a thing taken away by violence, or d has deceived his neighbor, 3or has found what e was lost, and lies concerning it, and f swears falsely in any of these things that a man does, sinning in it, 4then it will be, because he has sinned and is guilty, that he will restore what he took violently away, or the thing that he has g deceitfully extorted, or what was delivered to him to keep, or the lost thing that he found, 5or all that about which he has sworn falsely, he will even h restore it in the principal and will add one-fifth more to it. He will give it to him to whom it belongs in the day of his trespass offering. 6And he will bring his trespass offering to the LORD, i a ram without blemish out of the flock, according to your valuation, for a trespass offering to the priest. 7Then the priest will make atonement for him before the LORD. And it will be forgiven him for any one of these things that he may have done in which he trespasses.
Burnt Offering
8 ¶ Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 9“Command Aaron and his sons, saying, ‘This is the k law of the burnt offering. It is the burnt offering because of the burning on the altar all night until the morning, and the fire of the altar will be kept burning on it. 10‘And the priest will put on his linen garment, and his linen trousers he will put on his body. And he will take up the ashes that the fire has consumed with the burnt offering on the altar and put them m beside the altar. 11He will take off his garments and put on other garments and carry forth the ashes outside the camp to a o clean place. 12The fire on the altar will be burning on it. It will not be put out. And the priest will burn wood on it every morning and lay the burnt offering in order on it. And he will burn on it the p fat of the peace offerings. 13The fire will be burning continually on the q altar. It will never go out.
Grain Offering
14 ¶ ‘And this is the law of the grain offering. The sons of Aaron will offer it before the LORD, before the altar. 15He will take from it his handful of the flour of the grain offering and of the oil of it, and all the frankincense that is on the grain offering. And he will burn it on the altar for a fragrant aroma, even the memorial of it to the LORD. 16The remainder of it Aaron and his sons will eat, with unleavened bread it will be eaten in a holy place. They will eat it in the court of the tabernacle of the assembly. 17It will not be baked with leaven. I have given it to them for their portion of My offerings made by fire. It is most holy, as is the sin offering and as the r trespass offering. 18All the males among the children of Aaron will eat of it. It will be a statute forever in your generations concerning the offerings of the LORD made by fire. Everyone who touches them will be holy. 19 ¶ Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 20“This is the offering of Aaron and of his sons that they will offer to the LORD in the day when he is anointed, one-tenth of a w ephah of fine flour for a perpetual grain offering, half of it in the morning and half of it at night. It will be made with oil in a x pan. When it is baked, you will bring it in. And the baked pieces of the grain offering you will offer for a fragrant aroma to the LORD. 21And the priest of his sons y who is anointed in his place will offer it. z It is a statute forever to the LORD. It will be entirely burned. For every grain offering for the priest will be entirely burned. It will not be eaten.
Sin Offering
24 ¶ Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 25“Speak to Aaron and to his sons, saying, ‘This is the law of the sin offering. a In the place where the burnt offering is killed will the sin offering be killed before the LORD. It is most holy. 26The priest who offers it for sin will eat it. It will be eaten in the holy place, in the court of the tabernacle of the assembly. 27Whatever touches its flesh will be holy. And when any of its blood is sprinkled on a garment, in a holy place you will wash what was sprinkled on it. 28But the earthen vessel in which it is boiled will be d broken. And if it is boiled in a bronze pot, it will be both scoured and rinsed in water. 29All the males among the priests will eat of it. It is most holy. 30And no sin offering of which any of the blood is brought into the tabernacle of the assembly to make reconciliation in the f holy place will be g eaten. Chapter 7 — Guilt, Peace, and Priestly Offerings

1 ¶ ‘Now a this is the law of the trespass offering. It is most holy. 2In the place where they killed the burnt offering they will kill the trespass offering. And its blood he will sprinkle all around on the altar. 3And he will offer from it all its fat, the rump and the fat that covers the entrails, 4and the two kidneys, and the fat that is on them by the flanks. And the lobe that is above the liver, he will remove with the kidneys. 5And the priest will burn them on the altar for an offering made by fire to the LORD. It is a trespass offering. 6Every male among the priests will eat of it. It will be eaten in the holy place. It is most holy. 7As the sin offering, so also is the trespass offering. There is one law for them. The priest who makes atonement with it will have it. 8And the priest who offers any man’s burnt offering, even the priest will have for himself the skin of the burnt offering that he has offered. 9And e all the grain offering that is baked in the oven, and all that is dressed in the frying pan, and in the pan, will be the priest’s who offers it. 10And every grain offering mingled with oil and dry, will all the sons of Aaron have, one as much as another.
Peace Offering
11f This is the law of the sacrifice of peace offerings that he will offer to the LORD. 12If he offers it for a thanksgiving, then he will offer it with the sacrifice of thanksgiving unleavened cakes mingled with oil and unleavened wafers g anointed with oil, and cakes of well stirred fine flour mixed with oil. 13Besides the cakes he will offer for his offering h leavened bread with the sacrifice of thanksgiving of his peace offerings. 14And from it he will offer one cake out of the whole gift for a heave offering to the LORD. i It will belong to the priest who sprinkles the blood of the peace offerings. 15And the flesh of the sacrifice of his peace offerings for thanksgiving will be eaten the same day that it is offered. He will not leave any of it until the morning. 16But k if the sacrifice of his offering is a vow or a voluntary offering, it will be eaten the same day that he offers his sacrifice. And the remainder of it will be eaten on the next day. 17But on the third day the remainder of the flesh of the sacrifice will be burned with fire. 18And if any of the flesh of the sacrifice of his peace offerings is eaten at all on the third day, it will not be accepted, nor will it be l accounted for his benefit. It will be an abomination. And the soul that eats of it will bear his iniquity. 19The flesh that touches any unclean thing will not be eaten. It will be burned with fire. And as for the flesh, anyone who is clean will eat of it. 20But the soul who eats of the meat of the sacrifice of peace offerings that pertains to the n LORD, having his uncleanness in him, that soul p will be cut off from his people. 21Moreover, the soul who touches any unclean thing as the q uncleanness of man, or any r unclean animal, or any s abominable unclean thing, and eats of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace offerings that pertains to the LORD, that soul will be t cut off from his people.
Forbidding Fat & Blood
22 ¶ Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 23“Speak to the children of Israel, saying, u ‘You will eat no manner of fat of an ox or of a sheep or of a goat. 24The fat of the animal that dies by itself and the fat of what is torn by animals may be used in any other way, but you will in no wise eat of it. 25For whoever eats the fat of the animal of which men offer an offering made by fire to the LORD, the soul who eats it will be cut off from his people. 26Moreover, in any of your dwellings, you will eat no manner of blood, whether it is of bird or of animal. 27Whoever eats any manner of blood, that soul will be cut off from his people.”
Portion for Priests
28 ¶ Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 29“Speak to the children of Israel, saying, w ‘He who offers the sacrifice of his peace offerings to the LORD will bring his gift to the LORD of the sacrifice of his peace offerings. 30His own hands will bring the offerings to the LORD made by fire. He will bring the fat with the breast so that the y breast may be waved for a wave offering before the LORD. 31‘And the priest will burn the fat on the altar. But the a breast will belong to Aaron and his sons. 32‘And you will give the right shoulder to the priest for a heave offering of the sacrifices of your peace offerings. 33He among the sons of Aaron who offers the blood of the peace offerings and the fat will have the right shoulder for his part. 34For the c wave breast and the heave shoulder I have taken from the children of Israel from the sacrifices of their peace offerings. And I have given them to Aaron the priest and to his sons by a statute forever from among the children of Israel. 35¶ This is the portion of the anointing of Aaron and of the anointing of his sons, out of the offerings of the LORD made by fire, in the day when he presented them to minister to the LORD in the priest’s office. 36These the LORD commanded to be given them from the children of Israel d in the day that he anointed them, by a statute forever throughout their generations.” 37¶ This is the law of the e burnt offering, of the f grain offering, and of the g sin offering, and of the h trespass offering, and of the i consecrations, and of the j sacrifice of the peace offerings, 38that the LORD commanded Moses in Mount Sinai in the day that he commanded the children of Israel k to offer their gifts to the LORD in the wilderness of Sinai.

Chapter 8 — Consecration of Aaron & His Sons

1 ¶ Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2a Take Aaron and his sons with him, and the b garments and the c anointing oil, and a d bull for the sin offering and two e rams and a basket of unleavened bread. 3Then gather all the assembly together to the door of the tabernacle of the assembly.” 4So Moses did as the LORD commanded him. And the assembly was gathered together to the door of the tabernacle of the assembly. 5And Moses said to the assembly, “This is the thing that the LORD commanded to be done.” 6 ¶ Then Moses brought Aaron and his sons and f washed them with water. 7Then he g put on him the coat and girded him with the sash. And he clothed him with the robe and put the ephod on him. And he girded him with the artistic band of the ephod and bound it to him with it. 8And he put the breastplate on him. He also h put in the breastplate the Urim and the Thummim. 9i Then he put the turban on his head. Also on the turban, even on its front, he put the golden plate, the holy crown, as the LORD commanded Moses. 10j And Moses took the anointing oil and anointed the tabernacle and all that was in it. And he sanctified them. 11Then he sprinkled some of it on the altar seven times, and anointed the altar and all its vessels, both the laver and its stand, to sanctify them. 12And he k poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed him, to sanctify him. 13l Then Moses brought Aaron’s sons and put coats on them. And he girded them with sashes and put caps on them as the LORD commanded Moses. 14m Then he brought the bull for the sin offering. And Aaron and his sons n laid their hands on the head of the bull for the sin offering. 15Then he killed it. And o Moses took the blood and put it on the horns of the altar all around with his finger. And he purified the altar and poured the blood at the bottom of the altar and sanctified it, to make reconciliation on it. 16 pThen he took all the fat that was on the entrails and the lobe above the liver, and the two kidneys and their fat, and Moses burned it on the altar. 17But the bull and its hide, its flesh and its dung, he burned with fire outside the camp, as the LORD q commanded Moses. 18r Then he brought the ram for the burnt offering. And Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram. 19And he killed it. And Moses sprinkled the blood on the altar all around. 20Then he cut the ram into pieces. And Moses s burned the head and the pieces and the fat. 21And he washed the entrails and the legs in water. And Moses burned the whole ram on the altar. It was a burnt sacrifice for a fragrant aroma and an offering made by fire to the LORD t as the LORD commanded Moses. 22 ¶ Then u he brought the other ram, the ram of consecration. And Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram. 23And he killed it. And Moses took of v its blood and put it on the tip of Aaron’s right ear and on the thumb of his right hand and on the great toe of his right foot. 24Then he brought Aaron’s sons and Moses put some of the w blood on the tip of their right ear and on the thumbs of their right hands and on the great toes of their right feet. And Moses sprinkled the blood on the altar all around. 25 xThen he took the fat and the rump and all the fat that was on the entrails, and the lobe above the liver, and the two kidneys and their fat, and the right shoulder. 26 yAnd out of the basket of unleavened bread that was before the LORD, he took one unleavened cake and a cake of oiled bread and one wafer. And he put them on the fat and on the right shoulder. 27Then he put all these z in Aaron’s hands and in his sons’ hands. And he waved them for a wave offering before the LORD. 28 a Then Moses took them from off their hands and burned them on the altar on the burnt offering. They were consecrations for a fragrant aroma. It is an offering made by fire to the LORD. 29And b Moses took the c breast and waved it for a wave offering before the LORD. It was Moses’ d part of the ram of consecration as the LORD commanded Moses. 30 ¶ And e Moses took of the anointing oil and of the blood that was on the altar and sprinkled it on Aaron and on his garments and on his sons and on his sons’ garments with him. And he sanctified Aaron and his garments and his sons and his sons’ garments with him. 31 ¶ Then Moses said to Aaron and to his sons, f “Boil the flesh at the door of the tabernacle of the assembly. And eat it there with the bread that is in the basket of consecrations as I commanded, saying, ‘Aaron and his sons will eat it.’ 32 g And that which remains of the meat and of the bread, you will burn with fire. 33“And you will not go out of the door of the tabernacle of the assembly for seven days, until the days of your consecration are at an end. For he will consecrate you for h seven days. 34 i As he has done this day, so the LORD has commanded to do to make atonement for you. 35Therefore, you will remain at the door of the tabernacle of the assembly day and night for seven days, and j keep the charge of the LORD so that you not die. For so I am commanded.” 36So Aaron and his sons did all things that the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses.

Chapter 9 — Priests Begin Their Ministry

1 ¶ Now it came to pass on the a eighth day that Moses called Aaron and his sons and the elders of Israel. 2And he said to Aaron, “Take a b young calf for a sin offering and a ram without blemish for a burnt offering, and offer them before the LORD. 3And you will speak to the children of Israel, saying, c ‘Take a kid of the goats for a sin offering and a calf and a lamb, both of the first year, without blemish, for a burnt offering. 4Also take a bull and a ram for peace offerings, to sacrifice before the LORD, and a d grain offering mingled with oil. For e today the LORD will appear to you.’ 5 ¶ So they brought what Moses commanded before the tabernacle of the assembly. And all the assembly drew near and stood before the LORD. 6Then Moses said, “This is the thing that the LORD commanded that you should do. And the glory of the LORD will appear to you.” 7And Moses said to Aaron, “Go to the altar and f offer your sin offering and your burnt offering, and make atonement for yourself and for the people. And g offer the offering of the people and make atonement for them as the LORD commanded.” 8 ¶ Aaron therefore went to the altar and slew the calf of the sin offering that was for himself. 9And the sons of Aaron brought the blood to him. And he dipped his finger in the blood and put it on the horns of the altar and poured out the blood at the bottom of the altar. 10 h But the fat and the kidneys and the lobe above the liver of the sin offering, he burnt on the altar as the LORD commanded Moses. 11 i And the meat and the hide he burned with fire outside the camp. 12 ¶ Then he slew the burnt offering. And Aaron’s sons presented to him the blood and he j sprinkled it all around on the altar. 13 k And they presented the burnt offering to him with its pieces and the head. And he burned them on the altar. 14 l And he washed the entrails and the legs and burned them on the burnt offering on the altar. 15m Then he brought the people’s offering and took the goat that was the sin offering for the people, and slew it. And he offered it for sin as the first. 16 Then he brought the burnt offering and offered it n according to the ordinance. 17 Then he brought the grain offering and took a handful of it and burned it on the altar o beside the burnt sacrifice of the morning. 18 ¶ He slew also the bull and the ram for a p sacrifice of peace offerings that was for the people. And Aaron’s sons presented to him the blood and he sprinkled it all around on the altar. 19 But the fat of the bull and of the ram—the rump and what covers the entrails, and the kidneys and the lobe above the liver— 20 these they placed on the breasts, and q then he offered them up in smoke on the altar. 21 And the breasts and the right shoulder Aaron waved for a r wave offering before the LORD as Moses commanded. 22 ¶ Then Aaron lifted up his hand toward the people and s blessed them. Then he came down from the offering of the sin offering and the burnt offering and peace offerings. 23 Then Moses and Aaron went into the tabernacle of the assembly and came out. And they blessed the people. And the glory of the LORD appeared to all the people. 24 And there came a t fire out from before the LORD and consumed on the altar, the burnt offering and the fat. So when all the people saw it, they u shouted and fell on their v faces.

Chapter 10 — Death of Nadab and Abihu

1 ¶ Now a Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, b took their respective censers and put fire in them. And they put incense on it and offered c strange fire before the LORD which He had not commanded them. 2 Then there went out d fire from the LORD and devoured them. And they died before the LORD. 3 Then Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the LORD spoke, saying, ‘I will be sanctified by those e who come near Me. And before all the people I will be glorified.’” So Aaron held his peace. 4 ¶ Then Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel the uncle of Aaron, and said to them, “Come near. f Carry your brothers from before the sanctuary out of the camp.” 5 So they went near and carried them in their coats out of the camp, as Moses had said. 6 Then Moses said to Aaron and to Eleazar and to Ithamar, his sons, “Do not uncover your heads, nor tear your clothes, lest you die, and lest g wrath come on all the people. But let your brothers, the whole house of Israel, bewail the burning that the LORD has kindled. 7 hAnd you will not go out from the door of the tabernacle of the assembly, lest you die. i For the anointing oil of the LORD is on you.” And they did according to the word of Moses. 8 ¶ Then the LORD spoke to Aaron, saying, 9 j“Do not drink wine nor strong drink, you nor your sons with you, when you go into the tabernacle of the assembly, lest you die. It will be a statute forever throughout your generations, 10 so that you may k distinguish between the holy and unholy, and between the unclean and clean, 11 land that you may teach the children of Israel all the statutes that the LORD has spoken to them by the hand of Moses.” 12 ¶ Then Moses spoke to Aaron and to Eleazar and to Ithamar, his sons that were left, m “Take the grain offering that remains of the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and eat it without leaven beside the altar. For n it is most holy. 13 And you will eat it in the o holy place because it is your share and your sons’ share, of the sacrifices of the LORD made by fire, for thus p I have been commanded. 14 qAnd the wave breast and heave shoulder you will eat in a clean place, you and your sons and your r daughters with you, for they have been given as your s share and your sons’ share out of the sacrifices of the peace offerings of the sons of Israel. 15 tThe heave shoulder and the wave breast, they will bring with the offerings made by fire of the fat in order to wave it for a wave offering before the LORD. And it will be yours and your sons’ with you by a statute forever as the LORD has commanded.” 16 ¶ Then Moses searched carefully for the u goat of the sin offering. And behold, it was burned up. And he was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, the sons of Aaron who were left alive, saying, 17 v“Why have you not eaten the sin offering in the holy place, seeing it is most holy, and God has given it to you to bear the w iniquity of the assembly, to make atonement for them before the LORD? 18 Behold, the x blood of it was not brought inside the holy place. You should indeed have eaten it in the holy place y as I commanded.” 19 But Aaron said to Moses, “Behold, z this day they have offered their sin offering and their burnt offering before the LORD. When things like these happened to me, if I had eaten a sin offering today, a would it have been good in the sight of the LORD?” 20 And when Moses heard this, he was satisfied.

Chapter 11 — Clean & Unclean Foods

1 ¶ Then the LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying to them, 2 “Speak to the children of Israel, saying, a ‘These are the animals which you will eat among all the animals that are on the earth. 3 Whatever divides the hoof and thus splits the hoofs, and chews the cud, among the animals, that you will eat. 4 However, you will b not eat of those that chew the cud or of those that divide the hoof: the camel, though it chews the cud, it does not divide the hoof. He is unclean to you. 5 Also the coney, because it chews the cud, but does not divide the hoof. It is unclean to you. 6 And the rabbit, because it chews the cud, but does not divide the hoof. It is unclean to you. 7 And the swine, though it divides the hoof, thus making a split hoof, yet it does not chew the cud. It is c unclean to you. 8 You will not eat of their flesh and you will not touch their carcass. d They are unclean to you. 9eThese you will eat of all that are in the waters. Whatever has fins and scales in the waters in the seas, and in the rivers, them you will eat. 10 And all that do not have fins and scales in the seas and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and any living thing that is in the waters, they will be f detestable to you. 11 They will be detestable to you. You will not eat of their meat, but their carcasses you will detest. 12 Whatever does not have fins or scales in the waters, that will be detestable to you. 13gAnd these are they that you will have in abomination among the birds. They will not be eaten. They are detestable: the eagle and the vulture and the buzzard, 14 and the red kite and the falcon in its kind, 15 every raven after its kind, 16 the horned owl and the screech owl, and the gull, and any kind of hawk, 17 the little owl, and the cormorant, and the great owl, 18 the white owl, and the pelican, and the osprey, 19 the stork, and any kind of heron, and the hoopoe, and the bat. 20 ¶ All flying insects that walk on all fours will be detestable to you. 21 Yet these you may eat of every flying insect that creeps on all fours: those which have above their feet jointed legs with which to jump on the earth. 22 These you may eat: the h locust after its kind, and the bald locust after its kind, and the cricket after its kind, and the grasshopper after its kind. 23 But all other winged insects that have four feet will be detestable to you. 24 ¶ And for these you will be unclean: whoever touches their carcass will be unclean until the evening. 25 And whoever picks up any of their carcass will i wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening. 26 The carcasses of every animal that divides the hoof but does not make a split hoof, nor chews the cud, are unclean to you. Everyone who touches them will be unclean. 27 And whatever goes on its paws among all manner of animals that go on all four, those are unclean to you. Whoever touches their carcass will be unclean until the evening. 28 And he who bears their carcass will wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening. They are unclean to you. 29 ¶ These also will be unclean to you among the creeping things that creep on the earth: the weasel and the j rat and any kind of lizard, 30 and the gecko and the monitor lizard and the wall lizard and the sand reptile and the chameleon. 31 These are unclean to you among all that creep. Whoever k touches them when they are dead will be unclean until the evening. 32 And anything on which one of them may fall when they are dead becomes unclean, whether it is any vessel of wood or clothing or skin or sack. Whatever vessel it is with which any work is done, l it must be put in water and be unclean until the evening, then it will be cleansed. 33 And every earthen vessel into which any of them falls, whatever is in it will be unclean, and n you will break it. 34 Of all food that may be eaten, that on which water falls will be unclean. And all drink that may be drunk in every such vessel will be unclean. 35 And every thing on which any part of their carcass falls will be unclean, whether it is oven or cooking pots. They will be broken down, for they are unclean and will be unclean to you. 36 Nevertheless a spring or pit in which there is plenty of water, will be clean. But the one who touches their carcass will be unclean. 37 And if any part of their carcass falls on any sowing seed that is to be sown, it will be clean. 38 But if any water is put on the seed and any part of their carcass falls on it, it will be unclean to you. 39 ¶ And if any animal dies that you may eat, he who touches its carcass will be o unclean until the evening. 40 And he who eats of its carcass will wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening. He also who bears its carcass will wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening. 41 ¶ And every creeping thing that creeps on the earth will be detestable. It will not be eaten. 42 Whatever goes on the belly and whatever goes on all four, or whatever has more feet among all creeping things that creep on the earth, them you will not eat, for they are detestable. 43 qYou will not make yourselves detestable with any creeping thing that creeps, nor will you make yourselves unclean with them so that you should be defiled by them. 44 For I am the LORD your r God. You will therefore sanctify yourselves and s you will be holy, for I am holy. Neither will you defile yourselves with any kind of creeping thing that creeps on the earth. 45 tFor I am the LORD who brings you up out of the land of Egypt to be your God. u You will therefore be holy, for I am holy. 46 ¶ This is the law of the animals, and of the birds, and of every living creature that moves in the waters, and of every creature that creeps on the earth, 47 vto make a difference between the unclean and the clean, and between the animal that may be eaten and the animal that may not be eaten.

Chapter 12 — Cleansing After Childbirth

1 ¶ Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Speak to the children of Israel, saying, ‘If a a woman has conceived and gives birth to a male child, then b she will be unclean seven days. She will be unclean c according to the days of the separation for her menstruation. 3 Then on the d eighth day the flesh of his foreskin will be circumcised. 4 And she will then continue in the blood of her purification for thirty-three days. She will touch no consecrated thing, nor enter into the sanctuary until the days of her purification are fulfilled. 5 But if she bears a female child, then she will be unclean two weeks, as in her menstruation. And she will continue in the blood of her purification for sixty-six days. 6eAnd when the days of her purification are fulfilled, for a son or for a daughter, she will bring to the priest to the door of the tabernacle of the assembly a f lamb of the first year for a burnt offering and a young pigeon or a turtledove for a g sin offering. 7 He will offer it before the LORD and make atonement for her. And she will be cleansed from the flow of her blood. This is the law for her who bears a male or a female. 8 hAnd if she is not able to bring a lamb, then she will bring two turtle doves or two young pigeons, the one for the burnt offering and the other for a sin offering. iAnd the priest will make atonement for her and she will be clean.’

1 ¶ Then the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, 2 “When a man has on the skin of his body a swelling or a a scab or a bright spot, and it is on the skin of his body like the infection of leprosy, then b he will be brought to Aaron the priest or to one of his sons the priests. 3 And the priest will look at the infection on the skin of the body. And when the hair in the infection has turned white, and the infection appears to be deeper than the skin of his flesh, it is an infection of leprosy. And when the priest has looked at him, he will pronounce him unclean. 4 If the bright spot is white on the skin of his body and in sight is not deeper than the skin, and its hair has not turned white, then the priest will isolate him who has the infection for c seven days. 5 And the priest will look at him on the seventh day. And behold, if the infection in his eyes has not changed, and the infection has not spread on the skin, then the priest will isolate him seven more days. 6 And the priest will look at him again the seventh day. And behold, if the infection is somewhat dark, and the infection has not spread on the skin, then the priest will pronounce him clean. It is a scab. And d he will wash his clothes and be clean. 47 ¶ “When a garment has a mark of mildew in it, whether it is a wool garment or a linen garment, 48 whether it is in the warp or woof of linen or of wool, whether in leather or in anything made of leather, 49 and if the mark is greenish or reddish in the garment, or in the leather, either in the warp or in the woof, or in anything of leather, it is a mildew mark and will be shown to the priest. 50 And the priest will look at the mark and isolate the article with the mark for seven days. 51 And he will look at the mark on the seventh day. If the mark is spread in the garment, either in the warp or in the woof, or in the leather, or in any work that is made of leather, the mark is a o mildew malignancy. It is unclean. He will therefore burn that garment... 59 This is the law of the mark of mildew in a garment of wool or linen, either in the warp or woof, or anything of leather, to pronounce it clean or to pronounce it unclean.

Chapter 14 — Cleansing From Skin Infections & Diseases

1 ¶ Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “This will be the law of the leper in the day of his cleansing. He will be a brought to the priest. 3 And the priest will go outside of the camp. And the priest will look, and behold, if the infection of leprosy is healed in the leper, 4 then the priest will command to take two live clean birds and b cedar wood and a c scarlet string and d hyssop for the one who is to be cleansed. 5 And the priest will command that one of the birds be killed in an earthen vessel over running water. 6 As for the living bird, he will take it and the cedar wood and the scarlet and the hyssop, and will dip them and the living bird in the blood of the bird that was killed over the running water. 7 And he will e sprinkle on him who is to be cleansed from the leprosy f seven times, and will pronounce him clean. And he will let the living bird loose into the open field. 8 Then he who is to be cleansed will g wash his clothes and shave off all his hair. And he will h wash himself in water so that he may be clean. And after this, he will come into the camp and will i stay outside his tent seven days. 9 But it will be on the j seventh day that he will shave all his hair off his head and his beard and his eyebrows, even all his hair he will shave off. And he will wash his clothes. He will also wash his flesh in water and he will be clean. 10 ¶ On the eighth day he will k bring two male lambs without blemish, and three-tenths of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil for a l grain offering, and one log of oil. 11 And the priest who pronounces him clean will present before the LORD at the doorway of the tent of meeting both the man to be cleansed and his offerings. 33 ¶ Then the LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, 34 d “When you have come into the land of Canaan that I give to you for a possession, and e I put the mark of mildew on a house of the land of your possession, 35 then he who owns the house will come and tell the priest, saying, ‘It seems to me there is as it were a f mark of mildew on the house.’ 36 Then the priest will command that they empty the house before the priest goes into it to see the mark, so that all who are in the house not become unclean. And afterward the priest will go in to see the house. 37 And he will look at the mark, and behold, if the mark on the walls of the house has greenish or reddish depressions and appears lower than the wall, 38 then the priest will go out of the house at the door of the house and shut up the house seven days. 39 And the priest will come again the seventh day and will look. And behold, if the mark is spread on the walls of the house, 40 then the priest will command that they take away the stones where the mark is, and they will cast them into an unclean place outside the city. 41 Then he will have the house scraped all around inside. And they will pour out the dust that they scrape off outside the city into an unclean place. 42 And they will take other stones and put them in the place of those stones. And he will take other mortar and will plaster the house. 43 ¶ And if the mark comes again and breaks out in the house after he has taken away the stones, and after he has scraped the house and after it is plastered, 44 then the priest will come and look, and behold, if the mark is spread in the house, it is a g malignant mildew in the house. It is unclean. 45 Then he will break down the house and its stones, and its timber, and all the mortar of the house. And he will carry them out of the city into an unclean place. 46 Moreover, whoever goes into the house during the time it is shut up will be unclean h until the evening. 47 And whoever lies in the house will i wash his clothes. And whoever eats in the house will wash his clothes. 48 ¶ And if the priest comes in and looks at it, and behold, the mark has not spread in the house after the house was plastered, then the priest will pronounce the house clean because the mark is healed. 49 And to cleanse the house, j he will take two birds and cedar wood and scarlet and hyssop. 50 Then he will kill one of the birds in an earthen vessel over running water. 51 Then he will take the cedar wood and the hyssop and the scarlet and the living bird, and dip them in the blood of the slain bird, and in the running water, and sprinkle the house seven times. 52 Then he will cleanse the house with the blood of the bird and with the running water and with the living bird and with the cedar wood and with the hyssop and with the scarlet. 53 But he will let go the living bird out of the city into the open fields and k make atonement for the house. And it will be clean.” 54 ¶ This is the law for any l mark of mildew and sores, 55 and for the m mildew of a garment, n and of a house, 56 and for a rising, and for a scab, and for a bright spot, 57 p to determine when it is unclean and when it is clean. This is the law of mildew.

Chapter 15 — Uncleanness From Discharges

1 ¶ Then the LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, 2 “Speak to the children of Israel and say to them, a ‘When any man has a discharge from his body, the discharge is unclean. 3 And this will be his uncleanness in his discharge: it is his uncleanness whether his body allows its discharge to flow or whether his body blocks its discharge. 4 Every bed on which he lies that has the discharge is unclean. And everything on which he sits will be unclean. 5 And whoever b touches his bed will c wash his clothes and d bathe himself in water. And he is unclean until the evening. 6 He who sits on anything on which he sat that has the e discharge will wash his clothes and bathe himself in water. And he is unclean until the evening. 7 Whoever touches the flesh of the one who has the discharge will wash his clothes and bathe himself in water. And he is unclean until the evening. 8 If the one who has the discharge f spits on one who is clean, then he will wash his clothes and bathe himself in water. And he is unclean until the evening. 9 The saddle on which he rides who has the discharge will be unclean. 10 Whoever touches anything that was under him will be unclean until the evening. And he who carries any of those things will wash his clothes and bathe himself in water. And he is unclean until the evening. 11 Whoever touches the one who has the discharge and has not rinsed his hands in water will wash his clothes and bathe himself in water. And he is unclean until the evening. 12 The g vessel of earth that he who touches who has the discharge, will be broken. And every vessel of wood will be rinsed in water. 13 ¶ When he who has a discharge is cleansed of his discharge, he will count seven days for his cleansing and wash his clothes and bathe his flesh in running water. And he will be clean. 14 On the eighth day he will take for himself i two turtledoves or two young pigeons, and come before the LORD to the door of the tabernacle of the assembly. He will give them to the priest. 15 The priest will offer them, one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering. k The priest will make atonement for him before the LORD for his discharge. 16l If any man’s seminal emission goes out from him, he will wash all his body in water. And he is unclean until the evening. 17 Every garment and every skin on which is the seminal emission will be washed with water. And he is unclean until the evening. 18 If a man lies with a woman so that there is a seminal emission, they will both bathe in water. And they will be unclean until evening. 19n If a woman has a discharge of blood, she will be set apart seven days. Whoever touches her will be unclean until the evening. 20 Everything she lies on in her separation will be unclean. Everything she sits on will be unclean. 21 Whoever touches her bed will wash his clothes and bathe in water. And he is unclean until the evening. 22 Whoever touches anything she sat on will wash his clothes and bathe himself in water. And he is unclean until the evening. 23 If it is on her bed or anything on which she sits, when he touches it, he will be unclean until the evening. 24o If any man lies with her and her menstrual impurity is on him, he will be unclean seven days. All the bed on which he lies will be unclean. 25p If a woman has a discharge of blood beyond her menstrual time, all the days of the discharge of her uncleanness will be as her menstrual impurity. She is unclean. 26 Every bed on which she lies all the days of her discharge will be as the bed of her menstruation. Whatever she sits on will be unclean. 27 Whoever touches those things will be unclean. He will wash his clothes and bathe in water, and be unclean until the evening. 28q If she is cleansed of her discharge, she will count off seven days, and after that she will be clean. 29 On the eighth day she will take two turtledoves or two young pigeons and bring them to the priest at the door of the tabernacle of the assembly. 30 The priest will offer one for a sin offering and the other for a r burnt offering. The priest will make atonement for her before the LORD for her uncleanness. 31 ¶ Thus you will s separate the children of Israel from their uncleanness, so they do not die in their uncleanness when they t defile My tabernacle among them. 32 u This is the law of the one who has a discharge, v and of the man who has a seminal emission so that he is unclean by it, 33 w and of the woman who is sick because of menstrual impurity, and for the one who has a discharge, whether male x or female, or a man y who lies with an unclean woman.’”

Chapter 16 — The Day of Atonement

1 ¶ Now the LORD spoke to Moses after a the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they offered before the LORD, and died. 2 And the LORD said to Moses, “Speak to Aaron your brother so that he b does not come at any time he chooses into the holy place within the veil before the mercy seat that is on the ark, so that he not die. For c I will appear in the cloud on the mercy seat. 3 Thus will Aaron d come into the holy place: e with a young bull for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering. 4 He will put on the f holy linen coat, have the linen undergarments, be girded with a linen sash and turban. These are holy garments. He will wash his body in water before putting them on. 5 He will take from h the assembly of Israel two male goats for a sin offering and one ram for a burnt offering. 6 ¶ Aaron will offer his bull of the sin offering for himself to i make atonement for himself and his household. 7 He will take the two goats and present them before the LORD at the door of the tabernacle of the assembly. 8 Aaron will cast lots for the two goats, one for the LORD and the other for the scapegoat. 9 Aaron will bring the goat on which the lot for the LORD fell and offer it for a sin offering. 10 The goat on which the lot for the scapegoat fell will be presented alive before the LORD to make j atonement with him and let him go into the wilderness. 11 ¶ Aaron will bring the bull of the sin offering for himself and make k atonement for himself and his house. He will kill the bull of the sin offering for himself. 12 He will take a l censer full of burning coals from off the altar, and his hands full of m fragrant incense, and bring it inside the veil. 13 n He will put the incense on the fire before the LORD so that the cloud covers the o mercy seat, so he does not p die. 14 q He will take the blood of the bull and sprinkle it with his finger on the mercy seat eastward, sprinkling before it seven times r. 15s He will kill the goat of the sin offering for the people and bring its blood t inside the veil, sprinkling it on the mercy seat as he did with the bull. 16 u He will make atonement for the holy place because of the uncleanness of Israel and their transgressions, and for the tabernacle of assembly that abides among them. 17 v No one will be in the tabernacle while he makes atonement until he comes out after atoning for himself, his household, and all Israel. 18 He will go to the altar and make atonement for it, putting blood on the horns of the altar and sprinkling seven times x, cleansing it from the uncleanness of Israel. 20 After atoning for the holy place, tabernacle, and altar, he will bring the live goat. 21 Aaron will lay hands on the live goat and y confess over it all the iniquities of Israel, z putting them on the goat’s head, then send it away into the wilderness by a designated man. 22 a,b The goat bears all their iniquities to an uninhabited land and is let go. 23 ¶ Aaron will enter the tabernacle, c take off the linen garments, leave them, wash his body, put on his garments, and offer the burnt offerings, making atonement for himself and the people. 25 d The fat of the sin offering will be burned on the altar. 26 Whoever lets the scapegoat go will wash his clothes and e bathe, then come into the camp. 27 f The bull and goat for the sin offering, whose blood was brought to make atonement, will be taken outside the camp and burned. 28 Whoever burns them will wash and bathe, then enter the camp. 29g In the seventh month, on the tenth day, you will afflict your souls and do no work, whether native or alien. 30 On that day, the priest will make atonement to cleanse you so that h you may be clean from all sins before the LORD. 31 i It is to be a Sabbath of solemn rest, and you will afflict your souls by statute forever. 32 j,k The anointed priest consecrated to minister in his father’s stead will make atonement wearing holy linen garments. 33 He will make atonement for the sanctuary, tabernacle, altar, priests, and all the people. 34 l This is an everlasting statute: to make atonement for Israel’s sins once a year.” And he did as the LORD commanded Moses.

Chapter 17 — Forbidding the Eating of Blood

1 ¶ Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Speak to Aaron and his sons and all Israel, saying, ‘This is what the LORD has commanded: 3 Any man from Israel who a kills an ox, lamb, or goat in the camp, or outside the camp, 4 and has not brought it to the door of the tabernacle of assembly to offer it to the LORD, that man will be considered b guilty of bloodshed, and will be cut off from his people. 5 The reason is that Israel may bring their sacrifices that they c offer in the open field to the LORD, to the door of the tabernacle, to the priest, and offer them for peace offerings. 6 The priest will d sprinkle the blood on the altar at the door of the tabernacle and e burn the fat for a fragrant aroma to the LORD. 7 They will no longer offer sacrifices to f devils, after whom they have gone to g play the harlot. This shall be a statute forever throughout their generations.” 8 “Say to them, any man of Israel or aliens among you who offer a burnt offering or sacrifice, 9 and does not i bring it to the door of the tabernacle to offer it to the LORD, that man will be cut off from his people. 10j Any man of Israel or aliens who eat any manner of blood, k I will set My face against that soul and cut him off from among his people. 11 For l the life of the flesh is in the blood, which I have given on the altar m to make atonement for your souls, for n it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul. 12 Therefore, no soul of Israel, nor any alien sojourning among you, shall eat blood. 13 Any man of Israel or aliens who o hunt and catch any animal or bird for food, he will p pour out its blood and q cover it with earth. 14 r For the life of all flesh is its blood. Therefore, you shall eat the blood of no flesh, for life is in the blood. Whoever eats it will be cut off. 15s Any soul who eats what dies of itself or is torn by animals, whether native or alien, t,u must wash clothes and bathe in water, and is unclean until evening. 16 But if he does not wash or bathe, v he will bear his guilt.

1 ¶ Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Speak to the children of Israel, saying, ‘I am the LORD your God a.’ 3 You shall not do as done in the land of Egypt where you lived, nor as in the land of Canaan where I bring you; you shall not walk in their ordinances b,c. 4 You shall do My judgments and keep My ordinances, to walk in them.
