The Book of Obadiah

From The Holy Bible

Chapter 1

1The vision of Obadiah. Thus says the Lord GOD concerning Edom, "We have heard a rumor from the LORD and an ambassador is sent among the nations, 'Arise, and let us rise up against her in battle.'a 2"Behold, I will make you small among the nations. You will be greatly despised. 3"The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who dwell in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high, who says in his heart, 'Who will bring me down to the ground?'b 4"Though you exalt yourself as the eagle, and though you set your nest among the stars, from there I will bring you down," says the LORD.c 5"If thieves came to you, if robbers by night--Oh, how you would be cut off--would they not have stolen until they had enough? If the grape gatherers came to you, would they not leave some grapes?d 6"Oh, how the things of Esau are ransacked! How his hidden things are sought after!e 7"All the men of your alliance have brought you even to the border. The men who were at peace with you have deceived you and prevailed over you. Those who eat your bread have laid a trap for you. There is no one aware of it.f 8"Will I not in that day," says the LORD, "even destroy the wise men out of Edom and understanding out of the mountains of Esau?g 9"And your mighty men, O Teman, will be dismayed, to the end that everyone of the mountains of Esau may be cut off by slaughter.h 10"For your violence against your brother Jacob, shame will cover you and you will be cut off forever.i 11"In the you stood on the other side, in the day that the foreigners carried away captive his forces and foreigners entered into his gates and cast lots on Jerusalem, even you were as one of them.j 12"But you should not have looked on the day of your brother in the day that he became a foreigner. Neither should you have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction. Neither should you have spoken proudly in the day of their distress.k 13"You should not have entered into the gate of My people in the day of their calamity. Yes, you should not have gloated over their affliction in the day of their calamity, nor laid hands on their possessions in the day of their calamity.l 14"Neither should you have stood in the fork of the road to cut off those of his who escaped. Neither should you have delivered up those of his who remained in the day of distress.m 15"For the day of the LORD is near on all the nations. As you have done, so it will be done to you. Your reward will return on your own head.n 16"For as you have drunk on My holy mountain, so will all the nations drink continually. Yes, they will drink and they will swallow down. And they will be as though they had never been.o 17"But on Mount Zion there will be deliverance and there will be holiness. And the house of Jacob will possess their possessions.p 18"And the house of Jacob will be a fire and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau for stubble. And they will kindle in them and devour them. And there will not be any remaining of the house of Esau," for the LORD has spoken it.q 19Then those of the south will possess the mountain of Esau, and those of the plain the Philistines. And they will possess the fields of Ephraim and the fields of Samaria. And Benjamin will possess Gilead.r 20And the captivity of this host of the children of Israel will possess the land of the Canaanites, even to Zarephath. And the captivity of Jerusalem that is in Sepharad, will possess the cities of the south.s 21And saviors will come up on Mount Zion to judge the mountains of Esau, and the kingdom will be the LORD'S.t
